PAIL OR CONTAINER Filed Dec. 27, 1938 INVENT OR.
ATTORNEY.
Patented Aug. 26, 194 1 PAIL OR CONTAINER Colin B. Dale, Oak Park, 111., asslgnor to Wilson &
Bennett Manufacturing Company,
Chicago,
111., a corporation of Illinois Application December 27, 1938, Serial No. 247,735
Claims.
Certain types of pails or containers are commonly madeso that they may be nested for stacking for convenience in storing or shipping. Some of such pails, as for instance those shown in Patent No. 1,974,132, S. A. Bennett, September 18, 1934, have covers provided with central raised portions or embossments which support the superimposed pails. substantial peripheral portion of the embossment is omitted to provide for a pouring spout. When a number of such pails are stacked or nested As shown in such patent, a-
the principal portion of the top and a depressed portion 8 in which is positioned the pouring spout 9. As shown in Figure 1 this depressed portion forms a substantial break or recess in the periphery of the raised portion. and any superimposed pail resting on the raised portion will ordinarily be unsupported throughout this'area. In
order that the superimposed or nested pail will be fully supported I provide a support or stacking and such recessed portions come in vertical alignment there is a tendency for the pails in the stack to swing or move towards the sides where the spouts are positioned which occasionally causes the stacks to tip over with consequent loss or damage. It is also the custom in handling such pails, for workmen to tip the stack and roll it along, using the bottom pail as the rolling or supporting element. On account of the depressed spout areas the covers do not provide continuous peripheral support for the superimposed pails and consequently a superimposed pail may tip when the depressed area is on the lower inclined portion of the stack, thus further tending to diiiiculty in moving the stacks of pails.
The object of the present invention is to provide means applicable to pails of the character set forth, to provide'sufficient peripheral support for the superimposed pails to prevent tipping of one pail on another; to provide a spout .such as shown in said patent with an attachment 'for supporting a superimposed pail; to provide a cover having a peripheral upwardly extending bead for engagement with a superimposed pail, said pail also having a peripheral groove in the bottom thereof for engagement with said bead and with said support; and to provide such improvements and advantages as will be described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, I
Figure 1 is a plan view showing a portion of my improved pail;
Figure 2 is a side view of the'same;
Figure 3 is a sectional .view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a side view showing-one pail resting on another, parts being broken away to show the interengagement of the cover bead with the groove in the bottom of the upper pail.
The pail or container-5 illustrates a steel pail such as commonly made of about fivegallons capacity and which is provided with any suitable cover as for instance one of the lug type 6. This attachment ill to provide support for the superimposed pail in this depressed area.
In' order to properly support the superimposed pail the support ill should preferably be located at about the center of the arc defining the outer side wall of the spout; The bracket then extends up and has a curved or rounded top l2 and con- ,tinues in a downwardly extending leg having a foot I3 which rests on the top surface of the cover. This construction is such that a relatively small bracket makes a substantially stifl' and substantial support and as it moves with the pouring spout, it will not interfere with the operation of the same.
In order to provide an interlocking engagement between the pails each cover has an annular upwardlyextending bead l4 around the edge of the raisedportion or embossment I, this bead extending upwardly to the same height or level as the top of the support Ill. The bottom iii of each pail is provided with a peripheral groove [6 which is engaged by the bead and support of the lower pail when they are nested as shown particularly inFigures 3 and 4. It will of course be understood that the pouring spout is in retracted or inoperative position as shown when the pails are to hold the pails together.
cover has a raisedor embossed portion I forming The invention has been illustrated as applied to a particular form of pail but certain features thereof may be adapted to other containers and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction herein set forth except as specified in the following claims, in which I claim:
1. The combination with a pail having a cover with a raised portion throughout the main extent thereof adapted to support a superimposed pail and having a depressed portionat one side for receiving a movable spout, a spout rotatably mounted in said depressed portion and adapted to swing out over the edge of the cover, and a support secured to the spout and extending upwardly to the same level as the raised portion of the cover, said support being positioned adjacent to the periphery of the cover when the spout is in retracted position whereby it will coact with the raised portion for supporting a superimposed pail.
2. A pail cover having a raised portion for supporting a similar pail and having a recess in the periphery of the raised portion, a spout movably mounted on the cover in said recess and a support in said recess carried by said spout and adapted to coact with the raised portion for supporting a similar pail.
3. The combination with a can or container having a cover with a raised portion with a recess in the periphery thereof and having a pouring spout movably mounted in said recess, of a bracket secured to one side of the pouring spout and extending upwardly to approximately the same height as the raised portion of the cover and adapted to coact with the raised portion in supporting a similar can or container in stacked relation thereto.
4. A pail or the like having a cover, the main 7 portion of which is raised above the top edge or head or the pail and which surrounds an unraised portion adjacent to one side, a pouring spout rotatably mounted in the unraised portion,
and a, bracket secured to the spout and extending upwardly to the level of the raised portion and then downwardly with its lower end resting on the unra'i-sed portion for the purposes described.
5. A container or the like having a cover. the
'main portion 01' which is raised above the top COLIN B. DALE.
