engage against the bottom wall llc of cabinet ila and so operate to check movement of the seat under influence of counterweights 21. It must, likewise, be obvious that movement of the seat under iniluence of either the spring or counterweight will. be an accelerated motion, since the seat in its upward movement will have an effective loss in weight assisting such acceleration beyond the point to which itwould be normally accelerated after once overcoming the inertia of initial movement. Lamps of the character suitable for this purpose are susceptible to shock, and this condition is accentuated in a'device of this character due to the elongation of the lamp employed. "For this reason, I provide a dash-pot mechanism-comprising a cylinder 32 which I pivot at 33 to a cup-shaped housing Il secured to the rear wall of the cabinet. This dash-pot has arranged therein the usual piston 3l the stem of which', indicated at I6, is 'confsacarsev w Since the constructions illustrated are, obviously, capable of considerablemodiflcation, I donotwishtobeunderstoodaslimitingmyself thereto except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
l. In a toilet, a bowl, a toilet seat movable to usable and unusable positions with relation to the bowl, a cabinet receiving the seat when in unusable position and closely fitting about the edges thereof without contacting the same. a
- lamp in said cabinet emitting a non-heating nected with a short-arm I1 preferably secured to the second hinge element 2l in such fashion that as the seat I2a is drawn downwardly air is admitted to the cylinder and as Ithe seat moves upwardly it is gradually expelled at a rate controlled by an adjusting device 38 which may be oi' any usual or preferred construction. For eziample, this device may bea screw loosely :lltted in a threaded opening and a spring 39 utilized to regulate its engagement with the threads ofthe opening and, accordingly, the pressure at which air will escape about the screw through the threads.
In the present construction the switch ila is of the tilting mercury tube type and is located in the upper end of the cabinet and operated through `a pivoted lever 4l one end of which is engaged bythe seat through an adjustable screw 4| at present shown as carried by sleeve l28 and the. other end of which operates a verticallyextending rod 42 the upper end of which controls operationof switch lla.
sterilizing ray, a reector in said cabinet and directing the rays of the lamp to all portions of the vupper surface of the seat, a normally open switch controlling the circuit of the lamp and closed by movement of the seat to unusable position, and ,means constantly urging the seat to unusable position.
I,2. In a toilet, a bowl, a toilet seat movable to usable and unusable positions with relation to the bowl.' a cabinet receiving theseat when in unusable position and closely fitting without con-.- tact about the edges thereof, a lampin said cabinet emitting a non-heating sterilizing ray and operative when the seat isin unusable position. a reflector in said cabinet and directing the rays of the lamp to all portions kof the upper surface of the seat, means constantly urging the seat to unusable posltion, means to check movement of the seat at a predetermined position, a shaft rotatably supported Yby the cabinet and'to which the seat is secured, an arm on said shaft and a dashvpot connected between said arm and thecabinet.
to unusable position, a reflector in said cabinet and directing the rays of the lamp to all portions of the upper surface of the seat, means constantly urging the seat to unusable position, a shaft rotatably supported by the cabinet and to which the seat is secured, an arm on said shaft and a dash-pot connected between said arm and the cabinet. g
