Description
Patented Apr. 21, 1942 DOOR CONTROL FOR ELECTRIC PULL SOCKETS Andrew S. Kinney, Redwood Falls, Minn.
Application April 4, 1940, Serial No. 327,906
(Cl. 20D-54) 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a door control for electric pull sockets.
It is primarily aimed to provide such a device as will effect the lighting of a lamp when a door is opened, with the lamp remaining illuminated after the door is closed and which will cause extinction of the lamp when the door is again opened as in the act of leaving the room or location where the lamp is located. Such a device has particular use, where a lamp is to be illuminated upon approach into a room and while remaining in a room and is to be extinguished upon leaving such room. Examples of such a room are toilets, basements, garages, and attics.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in horizontal section through a room in connection with which my improvements are shown;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a horizontal section of a fragment of a room showing a modied form of my improvements, and
Figure 4 is a vertical section taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 3.
Referring specifically to the drawing and first to the form shown in Figure 2, a conventional room is suggested at I0 having a door I I, adapted to swing outwardly on a vertical axis I2. An electric lamp I3 is operatively wired within the room III and it is operated by a pull chain I4 and conventional switch mechanism, which lights and extinguishes the lamp I3 through alternate pulls on the chain I4.
A bracket I5 is suitably fastened as at I6 to wall structure within the room` I0 and an angular control lever Il is pivoted on a vertical axis at III to the bracket I5. A coil spring I9 is fastened to one arm of lever I1 and to the bracket I5 while another coil spring 20 is fastened to the v other arm of the lever I'I and to an eyelet or the like 2| on the inside of the door I I. Such springs I9 and 20 maintain the angle lever II in the predetermined position shown by the full lines in the drawing.
A draw element in the form of a cord or the like 22 is fastened to one end of one of the arms of lever I1 and at the other end to the pull chain I4, such draw element being guided over a pulley 23 plvoted at 24 on the bracket I5.
Presuming lamp I3 to be extinct, upon door II being opened by pulling outwardly thereon, the parts will be moved from the full line to the dotted line position in Figure 1, spring 2D being tensioned and rocking the lever I1, tensioning eil) the spring I9, pulling the draw member 22 and the pull chain I4, thereby causing lamp I3 to illuminate. Upon the door II being closed, the springs I9 and 20 restore the lever I'I to its normal position and providing sufficient slack in the draw element 22 to enable the pull chain I4 to return to its original position for a succeeding operation. It will be realized, that the interior of the room IIJ will thus be lighted and has been lighted through the act of the person opening door II and entering the room. Upon such person leaving the room, he will open the door Il, thus again moving the parts to the dotted line position and pulling the chain I4, so that upon closing the door II, the lamp I3 will be extinguished and the chain I4 moved to position for the succeeding operation.
In Figures 3 and 4, the invention has been shown in connection with a. door Il' which is adapted to swing inwardly in opening it, from a vertical axis at I2. In connection with such a structure, the bracket I5 is fastened onto the doorframe as shown, In addition, a bracket 25 is fastened as at 26 to the door I I and the spring 20 instead of being fastened to the eyelet 2l is fastened to said bracket 25. Otherwise, the structure corresponds to that of the first form and operates in the same manner and performs the same function as the first form of the invention through the opening and closing of the door Il.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
l. A door operable control for an electric pull socket comprising a mounting bracket, a lever pivoted to said bracket, a spring connected to the lever and to the bracket, a, spring connected to the lever on the other side of the pivot from the first mentioned spring and adapted for connection to the door, a draw means extending from the lever for connection to the electric pull socket, a guide means over which the draw member passes, said guide means being mounted by said bracket, said lever being of L-shape, and the bracket having an arm to which the lever is pivoted.
2. In combination, a closure, and L-shaped bracket secured by its face portion to a supporting structure, a bell-crank pivotally secured at its heel portion to the outstanding portion of the L-shaped bracket, a tension spring between an intermediate portion of one leg of the bell-crank and the heel portion of the L-shaped bracket, a switch, a connection between one end of the bellcrank and the switch and a connection between the other end of the bell-crank and the closure.
