8 Claims.
My present invention has for its object to provide an extremely simple, rugged and highly erlicient hinge structure for attaching a seat and its cover to a closet bowl.
To the above end, the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and dened in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view showing the improved hinge structure applied to a closet bowl, fragmentarily illustrated, and hingedly connecting a seat and its cover thereto;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary View principally in rear elevation with some parts broken away and sectioned;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view partly in side elevation and partly in section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a View of the hinge structure partly in rear elevation and partly in section, on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail View showing one of the abutments moved away from the tubing, on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 6 is a View partly in side elevation and partly in section taken on the line 6-5 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 7 is a plan view showing the two hinge members in blank form as they are stamped from a single rectilineal sheet of metal; and
Figs. 3 and 9 are views of the two hinge members in edge elevation.
The numeral I8 indicates, fragmentarily, a closet bowl having the customary pairs of transversely spaced holes II for hinge anchoring means. The seat for the bowl Il] and its cover are indicated by the numerals I2 and I3, respectively.
The improved hinge structure includes a xed hinge member I4, a seat hinge member I6 and a cover hinge member I'I. Said hinge member I4 is, as shown, a single round steel rod bent into the form of a yoke, the intermediate or transverse section of which is indicated by the numeral I5 and the legs thereof are indicated by the numeral I8. The lower or free end portions of the legs I8 are screw-threaded, as indicated at I9. Before the hinge member I4 is bent into the form of a yoke, a brass tubing 28 is telescoped onto the hinge member I4 and when said member is bent into its yoke-like form, said tubing covers the entireintermediate section I5 of said member and extends, at its end portions, partway downwardly on theer legs I8. This tubing 20 not only strengthens the hinge member I4 but facilitates the finishing or plating thereof. The ends of the tubing 20 afford stops 2l, as will presently appear.
A washer-like abutment 22 is telescoped onto each leg I8, at the screw-threaded end thereof, and has in its upper face an annular recess 23 adapted to receive the respective lower end portion of the tubing 20. The stops 2I limit the telescopical movement of the abutments 22 onto the legs I8 and the end portions of the tubing 20 have a tight fit with the abutments 22 in their recesses 23 and thereby irictionally hold said abutments against axial or turning movements on the legs I8. Said abutments 22 are also made of brass. The external contour of the abutments 22 are free from sharp edges or grooves so that they can be easily wiped and kept clean.
Recesses 24 in the under sides of the abutments 22 are provided to receive and cover rubber washers 25 that rest on the upper face of the bowl II)V and are of such thickness as to hold said abutments out of contact with the bowl Il). The legs I8 extend through the holes II in the bowl I0 and which holes are completely covered by the annular abutments22 and sealed by the rubber washers 25. Said legs I8 are anchored to the bowl I0 by nuts 26 applied to the screwthreaded end portions of the legs I8 and draw the abutments 22 onto the bowl I0 and compress the rubber washers 25. These nuts 26 impinge against metal washers 21 on the legs I8 and rubber washers 28 are interposed between the under side of the bowl IU and the washers 2'I. The legs I8, above the abutments 22 are curved upwardly and forwardly and correctly position the trans- Verse section I5 of the fixed hinge member I4 relative to the seat I2 and its cover I3.
The seat hinge member I6 in plan is U-shaped and in edge elevation it is in the form of a right angle. The legs of the hinge member I5, at their outer end portions, are rolled to alord a pair of axially spaced hinge lugs 29 which are turnably mounted on the transverse section of the tubing 20. Stop pins 30 anchored in the hinge section I5 hold the hinge lugs 29 against axial shifting movement on the tubing 28. The rear end portion of the seat I2 extends into the angle formed by the hinge member I6 with the transverse portion of said member extending forwardly under said seat and secured thereto by screws 3l.
'I'he cover hinge member I'I in plan is in the form of the letter T and the outer end portion of the longitudinal section of said member is rolled around said tube to prevent the removal of the hinge members I6 and Il therefrom.
By reference to Fig. 7 it will be noted .that the two hinge members I6 and I'I are stamped from a single rectilineal sheet of metal without any Waste whatsoever.
The drawing illustrates a 'commercial form of the invention, but it will be understood that the same is capable of certain modications' as to details of construction, arrangement and-com.- bination of parts within the scope' of the invention herein disclosed.
What I claim is:
1. A hinge structure for attaching a-seatto a closet bowl comprising a single hinge rod bent into the form Iof a yoke and having means for anchoring its legs to a closet bowl, and a Seat hinge member pivoted to the transverse section of said rod.
2. A hinge structure for attaching a seat to a closet bowl comprising a single hinge rod bent into the forml of a yoke and having means for anchoring its legsV to a closet bowl, and a seat hinge member being applicable tothe hinge'rodY between the legs thereof by movement transversely ofthe respectivesection. of said rod'. 3. A hinge structureV for attaching a` seat to a closet bowlY comprising a single hinge: rod in the form of a yoke and having meansfor anchoring itslegs'to a closet bowl, a tubular'member surrounding the transverse section of the hinge rodand extending downwardly around thev legs thereof, and a seat hinge member pivoted to the transverse section of the tubular member.
4. A hinge structure for attaching a seat to a closet bowl comprising a single hinge rod in the form of a yoke, an abutment telescoped onto each leg of the hinge rod, a stop on each of said legs for the respective abutment thereon, a seat hinge member pivoted to the transverse section of said rod, and means on said legs co-operating with the abutments for anchoring the hinge rod to a closet bowl.
5. A hinge structure for attaching a seat to a closet bowl comprising a single hinge rod in the form of a yoke, a washer-like abutment telescoped onto each leg of the hinge rod, stops on the legs for the abutments thereon, the outer end portions of the legs being provided with screwthreadsv to receive nuts for co-operation with the abutments to anchor the hinge rod to a closet bowl, and a seat hinge member pivoted to the transverse section of the hinge rod.

A hinge structure for attaching a seat to a closet bowlcomprising a single hinge rod in the form of a yoke, a tubular member surrounding the transverse ysection of the hinge rod and extending partway downwardly around the. legs of the hinge rod, and washer-like abutments telescoped onto said legs and' held by the ends of the tubular member as stops.
7. The structure dened in claim 6 in. which the abutments at their upper faces are recessed to receive the end portions of the tubular member with Aa tight t to frictionally hold the abutments relative to the hinge rod.
8. A hinge structure for attaching aseat and a cover therefor to a closet bowl comprising a singlehinge rod bent into the form of a yoke and having means for anchoring its legs to acloset bowl, and a'seat hingemember and a cover hinge member independently pivoted to the transverse section of the hinge rod.
