To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THERON BOAEDMAN, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harness,of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to harness for draftanimals which are employed in drawing heavy loads, such as canal-boats, street-cars, 85e.

i The object of my invention is to distribute the strain more evenly upon the shoulders and the breast of thedraft-animal, and to render the harness readily removable from the draftanimal.

My invention consists, to that end, in the combination, with the hame, of a combined hame-collar and breast-collar secured to the hanne and connected with the trace by two tugs, one of which is attached to the hame-staple and the other to the breast-collar, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved harness applied to a horse. Fig. 2 is afront elevation of one-half of the harness. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the equalizer and bifurcated bearing connected thereto.

Like letters of reference designate similar parts in the several figures.

A represents a hame, and B the combined hame collar and breast collar, made in one piece and secured to the inner side of the hame by rivets c or any other suitable means.

rIhe collar B is composed of two halves, each secured to its respective hame, and provided at its upper and lower ends with suitable straps and buckles or other fastening devices, whereby the two parts are readily secured together at the front, when applied tothe draftanimal, so as to form a complete collar.

D is the hame-tug, attached to the hamestaple e in the usual manner; and F is the breast-tug arranged near the lower end of the collar B, so as to form a continuation of the breast-collar.

rlhe two tugs D and F are connected with their rear ends, respectively, to the upper and lower ends of an equalizer, Gr. The latter consists of a two-armed lever, which is pivoted between the jaws of a bifurcated bearing, H, secured to the forward end of the trace I.

The equalizer G is preferably provided with several holes, i, in either of which the fulcrumpin kmay be placed. The latter is made in the form of a thumb-screw or in any other suitable form, so as to be readily removable.

The strain of the trace I is distributed by the tugs D and F upon the hame and breast collars, and as the halves of the hame and breast collars which lie on the same side of the draft-animal are made in one piece and secured to the respective part of the hame, the strain is evenly distributed upon the shoulders and breast of the animal, and excessive pressure upon any one point and the galling resulting therefrom are entirely avoided.

By shifting the fulcrum-pin 7c the relative length of the two arms of the equalizer G can be altered, and theV strain can be divided unequally between the tugs D and F, if it is de sired to relieve either of them of a portion of the strain, when circumstances render this desirable.

Upon disconnecting the fastenings at the front which hold the two halves of the harness together, the latter can be readily removed from the animal and as readily be applied to another animal. This is especially desirable when the harness is designed for use upon animals which are employed in drawing streetcars and canal-boats, as these animals are frequently required to be changed without changing the harness.

I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y 1. The combination, with the hame A, of the collar B, composed of a hame-collar and a breast-collar made in one piece and secured to the hame, and the tugs D and F connecting the hame and collar with the trace, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the hame A and the combined hame and breast collar B, of the tugs D and F, equalizer Gr, and trace I, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the tugs D and F and trace I, of the equalizer Gr, provided with a series of fulcrum-holes, i, and a removable fulcrum-pin, k, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
