Description

G. w. ToLHuRsT.
Cultivator. 4
No. 22,520. Patented'jan. 4, 1859.
Inventor, %fv/. A M www/M2 PHOTO-LITHD. C0.N.V. (OSBUFNE'S PROCESS) PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. TOLHURST, OF LIVERPOOL, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming'part of Letters Patent No. 22,520, dated January 4, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ToLHURsT,
ot'Liverpoohin the county ot' Medina and State ot Ohio, have invented a new and uset'ul Improvement in Oorn-Gultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of devices hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use lny invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I make the frame ot' my cultivators without movable joints or hinges and in any shape most convenient for the locality in which they are used. I use three teeththe odd one may be placed behind or before and secured to the frame, as shown at A, Figure l, in the accompanying drawings. I then place the two other teeth as follows: one each side of the one marked A and about twenty inches behind or forward of it, as shown at B, Fig. 4. I support the lower part ot' the tooth by the braces marked C and G, Fig. 4. Said braces are secured to the frame at the front end-the back end to the tooth, about two-thirds the way down.
The brace C must be allowed to swing in and out from the machine. The frame being made incapable of adjustment, it is necessary to render the teeth adjustable, which I do by means ot' securing the tooth to the trame by the pivot, as seen at D, Figs. 1 and 4. After placing the tooth at the desired point it may be secured by means of' the hooks E, Figs. I and 4, and quadrant F. Said quadrant having two curves or anges on its outer edge furnishes the tooth with a support in any ot' its positions. The quadrant F is secured to the fratrie by means of' bolts or screws, so as to become a part and portion of the frame. Figs.2 and 3 are enlarged views ot the quadrant, to more fully show their construction.
What I claim as my invention, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangementot' the hanged quadra-nts F, pivots D, clamp-hook E, braces C and C', teeth A B, and rigid frame G, in the manner and for the purposes herein sett'orth and described.
GEO. W. TOLHURST.
