STEAM-ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,183, dated March 2, 1880. Application filed December 10, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEOPOLD THOMAS, of Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Engines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a steam-cylinder, partly in side view and partly in section, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is across-section thereof in the plane of the line 90 m, Fig. 1.

My invention relates to cylinders for steam engines; and it consists in certain novel combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim, whereby there is obtained a space or area for the free exhaust of steam and a saving of steam is effected.
The letterA designates the body of a steamcylinder, and 13 its heads, on each of which latter is cast or secured a valve-chamber, 0, so that the cylinder has two valve-chambers, one at each end. These valve-chambers O are, respectively, divided by a longitudinal partition, a, into two compartments independent of each other, one of which (marked G) constitutes a steam-supply compartment, while the other (marked 0 is a steam-exhaust compartment. Both the compartments 0 C have a slide-valve, b or b, which two valves are connected by rods 0 o with a bell-crank, D, combined with suitable mechanism to produce the proper motions of the valves.
The letters 0 c designate ports or openings in the cylinder-heads, whereby the steam is supplied to and exhausts from the cylinder, these ports being arranged in the path of the slide-valves I) I), so that they are closed or opened at the proper intervals by means of the valves.
I use a single steam-supply port, 0, and a number of exhaust-ports, c, for the purpose of increasing the effect of the exhaust-compart ment O -namely, to insure the free exhaust of steam.
The supply-valve b is arranged in the steamsupply compartment 0, and without or exterior of the cylinder A, while the exhaustvalve b is within the cylinder, the same being provided with a lug projecting through one of the exhaust-ports 0 into the exhaust-compartment for connection with its rod or stem 0. By this arrangement of the valves the pressure of the steam is brought upon them, and hence tends to hold them to their seats.
The letter F designates plates forming seats for the valves 1) I). These plates F are apart or fixture of the cylinder-heads B, and are situated on the outer surfaces of the heads, where they are held by screws or other similar fastenings, so that they are detachable, and may be renewed at pleasure.
In order to seat the exhaust-valve b on the plate F this valve is arranged in a slot formed in a suitable part of the cylinder-heads, so that the exhaust-valve is practically in the cylinder-heads, and bears on the inner surface of its plate F. In other words, the two valves are within and without the cylinder, as before stated.
The letter G designates the piston of my cylinder, and H the piston-rod, which latter is guided in an eye, Z, formed in the partition (0.
In the old style of steam-cylinders, in which the steam discharges through the same space or port by which it enters, the steam exerts a back pressure on the piston, owing to its expansion in the cylinder. This is obviated by my invention, and it follows that I effect a saving of steam.
Another saving of steam in my cylinder is due to its being cut off close to the piston, so as to avoid the waste of that portion of steam which is in the old style of ports at the moment the cut-off takes place.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
