VILLIAM VILSON, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
STEAM-ENGINE.
EEE-CEFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339.961, dated April 13, 1886.
Application tiled December 19. 1885. Serial No. 186.229.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WiLsoN, residing at Bloomington,in the county ot'MeLean and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Engines, of which .the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a section through the center of the steam-cylinder, but through the steamchest, so as to cut through one ofthe ports in both of the valve-seats. Fig. 2 is a plan showing the steam-chest in place with its cover removed. Fig. 3 is a section through the cylinder on line xm of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a plan of the cylinder with the steam-chest removed, showing the steam-passages to, in, and from the cylinder. Fig. 5 is a cross-section through the steam-chest at line w of Fig. 6. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the steam-chest. Fig. 7 is 'a section through the steam-chest at line z z of Fig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrow, and showing the eXhaustv-alve seat. Fig. 8 is a section through the steam-chest on the line y y, looking in the direction of the arrow, and showing the admittingvalve seat. Fig. 9 is a plan view of the admitting valve and stem, looking at the face side of the valve. Figs. l0 and 11 are, respectively, side and end views of the same. Fig. 12 is a plan of the exhaust valves and stem, looking at the face side of the valves; and Figs. 13 and 14 are, respectively, side and end views of the same.
The leading object of my invention is to provide a cylinder and steainchest for a steamengine, and especially for a locomotive, in which a valve is used for ad mitting and cuttingoff purposes, and valves for release purposes, all contained in one steam-chest, but in ditt'erent compartments, each valve covering nmltiple ports, thereby securing a completer and constant release, which I accomplish as illustrated in the drawings, and hereinafter del scribed.
In the drawings, M represents a steamcylinder; N, a steamchest.
The chest is partially divided into three longitudinal compartments by means ot' partitions a b, which are provided with ports, and serve the purpose of valve-seats. That portion of the steam-chest marked K is one of (No model.)
the compartments, and extends the whole length of the chest. That portion marked L is another compartment, which also extends the entire length of the chest. The central portion or compartment between the two valveseats is divided into two parts or chambers, S T, by a partition, d, at the center', through which partition the exhaust-valve stem works in a steam-tight sleeve.
O represents the admittingwalve, which controls the por-tst t o o in the valve-seat a.
fis the valve-stem.
P R are the exhaust-valvese is that portion of the valve-stem g of the exhaust-valves which moves in the steamtight sleeve in the partition d. It is unnecessary to show such sleeve, there being nothing peculiar about its construction. The exhaustvalves P It control, respectively, the exhaustpcrtsp p 1' r. These valves O, P, and R are designed to be operated by the valve-gear described in my Patent No. 333,706, dated January 5, 1886.
A is the steam-passage leading from the boiler to that portion of the chest lettered K.
B is a passage which leads from one of the chambers, T, between the two partitions or valve-seats a b to one end of the steam-cylinder, and B is another passage which leads from the other chamber, S, between the two valve-seats et b to the opposite end of the steamcylinder.
C C are exhaust-passages leading from the chamber L in the steam-chest to a common eX- haust-passage, C.
The operation is as follows: Steam passes from the boiler through the passage A into that portion of the steam-chest marked K, and at the proper time the admitting-valve O simultaneously opens the ports o o and allows the steam to pass through them into the chamber T between the two Valve-seats a b, from which chamber T steam passes into the passage B, (see Figs. 3 and 4,) and through such passage B to one end ofthe cylinder. The
admitting-valve then closes the ports o 1;', and at the proper time the lexhaust-valve opens the ports 1 7" and allows the steam to escape through the chamber T and ports 1 r into the compartment L and out through the passages C C C. Then the admitting-valve opens the ports tt', and. allows steam to pass from the IOO compartment K into the chamber S, from which chamber it then passes through the passage B to the opposite end ofthe cylinder, and then the admitting-valve closes the ports t t', and the exhaust-valve at the proper time opens the ports p p', and the steam, having done its work, escapes through the chamber S and ports p p into the compartment L, and is exhausted through the passages C C C.
The valves can be so made and adjusted that the admission-valve will admit and cut oi steam, as desired, and so that the proper exhaustvalve will open at the proper time, and there will be a complete and constant release; and hence while the steam is working exp'ansively it will not have to overcome the usual resistance on the opposite side of the piston. At the same time the desired steamcushion can be provided for near the end of the stroke.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of thesteamfchest provided with two partitions and valve-seats a b, each having ports, with a space between the valve-seats divided into two parts or cham- -bers by a. partition, d, with an admission--y valve and exhaust-valves, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. In combination with a steamcylindera steam chest provided with partitions and valve-seats a b, each having ports, achamber,
K, to receive steam from a boiler, chambers T S between the two valve-seats, a chamber,
L, to receive exhaust-steam, an admissionvalve, exhaust-valves, a passage for the admission of steam from the boiler` to the chamber K, passages from the chambers T S to the: Y i
