RILEY DOTY, OF LEONARDSBURG, OHIO.
VALVE FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,978, dated August 28,1883.
Application filed December 27, 1882.
1 Reference is to be had to the accompanying Fig. 1.
drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a steam-chest and valves of my improved arrangement. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the valve-seat. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on line 3 11 Fig. 5 is a transverse section 011 line a 2, Fig. 3.
A is the steam-chamber and valve chest, which is made of a width for receiving two valves, B B. The valve-seat is formed with two parts, a a, that connect with steam-passages leading to the opposite ends of the cylinder, andthe steam-valve B, working upon the ports a, is made simply as a plain flat valve, connected toa stem, 11, for reciprocation.
c c are the exhaust-ports in the seat, connecting beneath the face of the seat with the steanrpassages d d. p I
(No model.)
0 is the main exhaustport between the two ports 0 c. The exhaust-valve B, working over the ports '0 c, is formed as :a bridgevalve, so that when reciproeated by its stem 1) the ports 0 are connected alternately with the middle port, 0'.
The two valves are to be operated by separate eccentrics, and it will be seen that they can be readily and independently adjusted so that the valve B will cut off the steam from the cylinder at any point in the stroke of the piston and the valve B will allow the exhaust at any point, and the exhaust-port may be kept open until the piston-head has reached the end of the stroke, whereby the resistance offered to the piston in returning the same when the exhaustis closed is avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a steam-engine, the combination, with the steam-chest A, provided with the steam-ports a a, the exhaust-ports c c c, and the passages d, of plain steamvalve B and the bridge exhaustvalve B, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby provision is made for cutting off the steam at any point in the stroke of the piston and keeping the exhaust open until the piston has returned to the end of the cylinder, as set forth.
