' D ST '1 Claim. (Cl. 6531) My present invention relates to dispensingdevices and more particularly to a closure and cutoff for a catsup bottle or similar container adapted to positively and sharply sever the discharge stream when the desired quantity has been dispensed.
Among the objects of the present invention is to provide a novel closure and cut-off for ready attachment to a bottle of the type containing catsup, or the like, for dispensing the liquid contents and cleanly shearing the discharge stream when a sufiicient quantity has been dispensed. Due to the novel construction of the closure and cut-off with its sharp cutting blade and stationary shearing member, there is eliminated all possibility of dripping after the stream has been sheared, the final drop or globule of the liquid being at once sheared and forcefully projected or hurled away from the device.
Another object is to provide a novel closure and cut-off provided with an actuating lever so arranged on a bottle containing a liquid to be dispensed, that the bottle can be held in pouring position and the actuating lever operated by'the use of but one hand.
A further object is to provide a novel construction of sanitary closure and dispensing device for a bottle of the type having a relatively long neck and used as a container for catsup, chili sauce, and the like. capabilities will be apparent from the description and disclosure in the drawing, or are comprehended or inherent in the device.

Referring in detail to the disclosure in the drawing of the novel dispensing device I is shown mounted on the neck 2 of a bottle or other container. Any suitable securing means may be provided for mounting the device on the neck of the bottle, such as the indentations 3 provided on the cover 4 and adapted to engage with com- Further objects, advantages and 'plementary indentations, threads or the like on the neck of the bottle. The cover 4 is formed in its upper surface with a discharge spout 5 having -a shearing edge '6 providing a stationary shearing member, and a diametrically arranged guideway or slot "l for sliding movement of arelatively thin and resilient shot-shearing or cutting blade under tension in its movement so that it closely shears across the upper edge of the spout and the stationary shearing edge 6, I provide a pair of inwardly projecting lugs or extensions 9, 9.
As will be apparent from the disclosure in Figure 3 the edge 6 is provided with a slight outward incline or rise and the shearing or cutting edge iii of the blade is adapted to project therebeyond. It will also be apparent from Figure 4 that this shearing or cutting edge I0 of the blade 3 is curved on a radius greater than the radius of curvature of the shearing edge or lip 6 of the spout, so that as the shearing or cutting blade 8 is rapidly shot or propelled across and beyond the shearing edge of the spout, the dispensed liquid is quickly and cleanly sheared or cut off with the last drop or globule of the dispensed liquid concentrated at the extreme forward edge of the spout and then cut off and hurled or projected away from the spout.
Secured to the shoulder H of the cover as by means of rivets or the like, is a stationary bracket l2 having an outwardly and. downwardly projecting leg I3 provided with a reduced end l4 forming a pivotal mounting for an operating lever or trigger l5 for actuating the shearing or cutting blade 8. This lever or trigger is provided at its upper end with a lug or projection [5 adapted to be received in an opening formed adjacent the rear end of the blade 8, and a, pointed or tapered projection I l aligned with an opening or vent H3 in the shoulder II. This vent insures a free flow of the dispensed liquid, while the projection I'I insures against clogging of the vent and provides a closure for closing the vent when the shearing blade is moved to its normal closed position.
In order to quickly propel or shoot the blade across the discharge spout and to normally retain it in its inoperative or closed position, I provide a relatively strong leaf spring l9 having its upper end seated below the bracket 12 and its lower end bent and retained between inwardly projecting flanges 20, 20 provided on the rear side of the lever or trigger l5. By reason of this mounting of the spring, it is always under compression.
In the operation of the novel dispensing device, the user employs but one hand in which he holds the neck of the bottle or other container and depresses the lever or trigger I5 against the compression of the spring [9 to retract the slidable shearing or cutting blade 8. This depressing of the lever on its pivot also withdraws the projection I! from the vent l8 so as to permit the free flow of liquid from the bottle. This spring being under considerable compression and tending at all times to move the resilient blade 8 into its closed or shearing position, it will be evident that removal of pressure from the trigger or lever I5 will permit the spring 19 to rapidly propel or shoot the sharp blade or shearing member over and across the spout and stationary shearing member, shearing and hurling the last drop of dispensed liquid away from the spout. The resilient outer edge of the slidable shearing blade being flexed by the lugs 9, 9, and maintained in close contact with the upper surface of the spout and stationary shearing edge as it is quickly propelled or shot across and beyond the edge of the spout, insures a clean cut-off or shearing of the dispensed liquid.
It will be seen that the invention provides a novel device for dispensing liquids. The resilient cutting blade 8 is readily removed for cleaning of the parts by lifting the rear end from the lug [6 by an instrument such as a screw driver or the like, and then rearwardly withdrawing the blade. Thus the device may be readily assembled or disassembled for cleaning.
The foregoing description and the accompanying drawing are believed to clearly disclose a preferred embodiment of my invention but it will be understood that this disclosure is merely illustrative and that such changes in the invention may be made as are fairly within the scope and spirit of the following claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A dispensing device including a cover having a front dispensing spout and a rear vent opening, a resilient blade slidably mounted on the cover and normally closing the spout, means for guiding the blade, a supporting bracket mounted on the cover and having a free end terminating in a fulcrum lug, an operating lever fulcrumed on the lug and having one arm loosely connected with the blade, said arm also having a portion projecting through the vent opening, and a leaf spring having one end anchored to the lever and its other free end contacting with the bracket.
