The present invention relates to dispensing devices for viscous liquids such as honey, syrup, pancake and waflle batter, etc., and more particularly to a novel combined shearing and projecting means and closurehaving cooperating parts so constructed and arranged as to positively and cleanly sever the stream of viscous liquid and prevent dripping. after the .desired quantity of such liquid hasbeen dispensed. This is a continuation in part of my co-pending application Serial No. 146,091, filed June 2, 1937.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a novel combined shearing device and closure adapted to be attached to a container or dispenser for efficiently dispensing a viscous liquid of the character of honey, syrup, etc.
A further object is to provide a combined shearing device and closure for a dispenser for viscous liquids provided with a novel construction of discharge spout and shearing blade so constructed and arranged that the spout forms a stationary shearing member and the blade forms a rapidly moving shearing member so as to clearly and 25 sharply cut oif the discharged stream of viscous liquid in such manner that the final drop or globule of the discharged stream will be collected at the front or tip of the spout and be projected away therefrom so as to eliminate all possibility 30 of dripping after the movable blade has been released.
Another object'of the present invention is to provide a novel construction of spout and resilient blade, the outer edge or end of the blade being 35 curved and the discharge edge of the spout being also curved, with the curvature of the edge of the blade having a. substantially greater radius than that of the discharge edge of the spout and formed in a curve with a flattergarc than that 40 of the spent, and with this edge oithe blade adapted to overlap or extend beyond the outer edge of the spout whereby to'shearfofl the discharged viscous liquid and hurl it away from the spout.
45 A still further object is to provide a. novel shearing device and closure for a dispenser of viscous liquids in which the shearing device comprises a stationary shearing element and a resilient blade providing the rapidly moving shearing element.
50 In the present embodiment, the upper edge of the spout is so arranged as to provide the stationary shearing element, with a guideway so formed as to receive and guide the movable or slidable blade over and in shearing relation with I the upper edge of the spout, and where the blade pensing viscous liquids,'said device being so constructed as to be held and readily operated or manipulated hand.
A still further object is to provide a novel attachment for use in dispensing viscous liquids from a bottle or other container, said attachment being provided with a spring actuated blade forming a combined closure for the spout and shearing member and means associated with the blade for positively venting the interior of the container to the atmosphere upon retraction of the blade to permit discharge of the contents of the container, and closing the vent when the blade is moved to its normal closed position.
Further objects, advantages and capabilities will be apparent from the description and disclosure in the drawing, or are comprehended or inherent in the device.

Referring more particularly to the disclosure in the drawing, the novel combined shearing deviceand closure 1 is shown as mounted upon a bottle or other container 2. Any suitable securing means may be'providedfor detachably mounting the shearing device and closure upon the neck of the bottle or container, such as the threads 3 formed on the interior of the member I and complementary threads 4 on the neck of the bottle.
The shearing device and closure I is provided at one edge with a discharge or dlspensing'spout 5 formed at its exterior with an outer arcuate lip 8. Located centrally in the cover or base is a guideway or channel I aligned with the lip and provided adjacent its forward end with inwardly projecting lugs 8, 8. adapted to form retaining and guiding members for a blade or shearing member 9. This blade is of relatively thin and resilient metal and forms a movable or slidable shearing element which closely contacts the upper edge of the spout and co-acts therewith to shear oil and forcibly hurl or propel the residue or final part of the sheared flow away from the spout and thereby eliminate or prevent, dripping. In order to accomplish this novel function and result, the invention comprehends providing the upper edge of the spout with a slight rise or incline with relation to the plane of the guideway or channel I and forming the spout with relatively thin walls with the width of the blade or slidable shearing member 9 slightly greater than the width or cross section of the spout opening, and the curvature of the shearing edge [0 of the blade having a greater radius than the radius of the arcuate edge or lip 6 of the spout and formed with a flatter arc. Thus as the blade 9 is quickly and forcibly moved or shot across the upper edge of the discharge spout which forms the stationary shearing member, it first shears the dispensed viscous liquid adjacent the opposite sides of the passage and next at the extreme forward edge of the arcuate lip, thereby concentrating or collecting the final fiow or globule of the dispensed liquid at the extreme forward edge of this lip, and as the shearing edge ill of the blade extends beyond the lip, the rapid movement of the propelled blade cleanly shears the viscous liquid and hurls or propels it away from the spout.
In order to rapidly propel or shoot the blade or shearing element 9 across the spout or stationary shearingmember in tight shearing relation therewith, the rear end I I of the blade which is slightly bent, is provided with a slot l2 for receiving a lug or upward projection l3 on the trigger or lever M pivotally mounted upon a pin l5 spanning a bifurcated bracket or extension I 6 of the closure. This trigger or lever I l is provided with spaced extensions I! and i8 providing a slot for the reception of one end IQ of a coil spring 20 mounted upon the pin IS, with the other end 2| of the spring bearing against the web 22 of the bracket or extension l6. To this bracket is detachably secured a handle 23.
To insure that the viscous liquid flow as freely as possible through the discharge spout, the closure is provided with an opening or vent 24. Since it is extremely important that the vent be opened and maintained open during pouring, I provide a pointed or tapered projection 25 formed or provided on the trigger or lever and aligned with the vent 24 so as to enter the latter when the trigger is released. a This projection insures against clogging of the vent of any obstruction or film of the viscous liquid which, due to its consistency, would tend to collect therein and clog the opening.
In the operation of the device, downward pressure applied to the trigger or lever M retracts the resilient blade againstthe compression of the spring 20. This springbeing quite heavy and tending at all times to move the blade into its closed or shearing position, it will be evident that removal of the pressure from the trigger will permit the heavy spring to propel or shoot the blade or slidable shearing member onto and across the spout, shearing and hurling the last vestige of the viscous liquid away from the spout. By the present arrangement of the blade, guideway or channel, lugs and incline of the upper surface of the spout, the resilient outer end of the blade or slidable shearing member will be flexed by the lugs and maintained in close contact with the upper surface of the spout and stationary shearing edge, so as to insure a clean cut- 011 or shearing of the dispensed liquid, and by extending the end of the blade or shearing member 9 beyond the outer edge of the spout, the last trace of the discharged liquid will be forcibly projected or hurled away from the spout.
It will be clearly apparent from the above desoription and the disclosure in the drawing that the invention comprehends a novel construction of dispensing closure and shearing device which is simple and positive in operation and is extremely sanitary. The resilient blade or slidable shearing member may be readily removed by lifting the rear end H from the lug or projection l3 and rearwardly withdrawing the blade. Furthermore,
due to this novel construction and arrangement,
the parts are self-cleaning.
Having thus disclosed the invention, I claim:
1. A combined cover and shearing device adapted for dispensing viscous liquids comprising in combination a base and cover member, a guideway, a resilient slidable shearing member mounted in said guideway, a dispensing spout provided with a stationary shearing member inclined upwardly from said guideway, said slidable member being resilient and adapted to flex and ride over the inclined stationary shearing member, means for positively shooting the flexible shearing member over and across said stationary shearing member, and means for maintaining the forward and of said slidable shearing member in tight shearing relation with said stationary shearing member.
2. In a combined cover and drip cutting device adapted for dispensing viscous liquids and cut ting away the final drip comprising in combination, a base and cover member having a dispensing spout provided with a stationary drip shearing edge, a resilient slidably mounted drip cutting member adapted to slide directly against and across said stationary drip shearing edge, the forward free cutting edge of said slidable member being curved and having a substantially flatter arc than the arc of the final dispensing portion of said spout so as to first shear the dispensed material adjacent the opposite sides of the spout and next at the forward edge of the spout thereby concentrating the dispensed liquid into a final drip at the forward portion of the spout where it is cut from said stationary shearing edge, and means for operating said slidably mounted drip cutting member.
3. In a combined cover and drip cutting device adapted for dispensing viscous liquids and cutting away the final drip comprising in combination, a cover having a dispensing spout provided with a stationary drip shearing edge, a resiliently slidably mounted drip cutting member whose outer forward free end is slightly greater than the opening in said spout, the drip cutting end of said slidable member being formed in a curve with a substantially flatter arc than the opening of said spout so as to first shear the dispensed material adjacent the opposite sides of the spout and next at the forward end of the spout thereby con- 75 centrating the dispensed liquid into a final drip at the forward portion of the spout where it is cut from said stationary shearing edge, and means for rapidly and positively shooting said slidable drip cutting member across and beyond the spout for shearing the flow and cutting the final drip from the spout.
4. In a combined closure and drip shearing device adapted for dispensing viscous liquids, a
10 guideway therein, a. spout provided with a stationary shearing member aligned with the guideway, a resilient shearing member slidably mounted in the guideway, one of said shearing members being inclined with respect to the other, means for rapidly propelling the slidable shearing member through the guideway and over the stationary shearing member with its forward resilient and riding over the stationary shearing member to shear the dispensing liquid.
