Filed April 9, 1940 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 A iiomeys Patented July 22, 1941 UNITED STATES tri This invention has reference to a rack particularly designed for use in facilitating the placing of a garment within a garment bag or similar receptacle such as used by garment cleaning establishments and in the home for protecting garments.

An object of the present invention is to provide a rack of this character that is characterized by simplicity of construction, adaptability to home and plant use and otherwise suitable for the purpose intended.

The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood by the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

Figure l is an elevational View illustrating the application of the invention and showing the garment bag positioned over the garment to be contained therein.

Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the assembly shown in Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the rack per se.

Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the rack shown mounted on a door and with the garment bag in a raised position on the rack, and

Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 4.

Referring more in detail to the drawings it will be seen that the rack indicated generally by the reference numeral 5 is, in accordance with the present invention, formed from a single length of suitable material, as, for example, strap iron, bent intermediate its ends into a substantial U to provide a relatively short attaching leg 6, a relatively longer suspension leg I, and a curved bight connecting the legs 6 and 1 at one end of the rack.

The leg 5 is provided with a vertical series of keyhole slots 8 through the medium of which and one or more fastening elements 9, such as screws or the like, the rack 5 may be readily mounted vertically on a door or similar support It.

The leg 6 has pressed out therefrom or otherwise formed or provided at the free lower end thereof a hook I I through the medium of which a garment hanger l2 may be readily suspended from the rack 5.

The bight portion 8 of the rack is provided I3 through which is threaded a length of cord or clip l5 in the manner clearly shown, and slidably embraces the leg I of the bracket 5 as also clearly shown.

The clip i5 is adapted to be engaged with the upper end of the garment bag H at the opening generally provided in said end of the bag to accommodate the suspension hook of the garment hanger such as illustrated and indicated by the reference numeral I2, and hereinbefore referred to.

In actual practice the bracket 5 is mounted in the manner shown and hereinbefore described on one side of a door or other suitable support i ii.

The clip [5 in lowered position is engaged with the bag I! as just explained and the operator then by pulling on the free end of the cord I4 raises the bag H to the position shown in Figure 4.

The garment hanger l2 with the garment thereon is then engaged with the hook H after which the operator pulls downwardly on the bag l1 and obviously as the bag I! moves downwardly the garment on the hanger l2 will be received therein. When the bag I! is in this lowered garment-enveloping position so as to expose the hook of the garment hanger l2, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the hanger l2 may then be readily disengaged from the hook II.

It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility, manner of use, and advantages of a rack embodying the features of the present invention will be had without a more detailed description thereof.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:

A garment bag rack comprising an inverted U-shaped member formed of fiat stock and having one limb longer than the other, a hook at the lower end of the long limb for receiving a garment hanger, means for fastening the other limb to a supporting member with the entire outer face of said other limb contacting the supporting member, a clamping clip for engaging a garment bag, a loop carried by the clip and slidingly engaging the long limb only of the U-shaped member, the bight of the U-shaped member being rounded and provided with three holes, one in the top of the bight and the others in end portions of the bight and a cord having one end fastened to the clip with the cord passing up the outer face of the long limb then passing through the hole adjacent the long limb, under a portion of the bight and then outwardly through the center hole, along a part of the bight and then passing downwardly and inwardly through the third hole with the rest of the cord hanging in the space between the two limbs.
