EDGAR B. JEWETT, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
COMBINED REFRIGERATOR AND SIDEBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,781, dated February 24, 1880.
- Application filed December 20, 1879. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR B. JEWETT, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements on a Combined Refrigerator and Sideboard; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheets of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has general reference to kitchen-furniture; and it consists, essentially,
in such peculiar combination of parts and details of construction as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims.
The object of my present invention is the production of a combined sideboard and refrigerator which shall be extremely simple 1n construction, contain but few parts, and be capable of being produced at a trifling figure over that of the refrigerator.
To thls end I construct my combined refrigerator and sideboard as shown in the drawings already referred to, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the same; Figs. 2 and 5, front elevations; and Figs. 3 and 4., side elevations, partly in section.
In these figures, the letter A designates a I refrigerator of any of the well-known and improved forms. This refrigerator has the usual top B, and in addition thereto an auxiliary top or lid, .0, of a size equal to or exceeding that of the top B, said lid being preferably hinged to the top B at the back, as shown at D;
This lid I prefer to construct of a rectangular frame, as shown in Fig. 2, consisting of two longitudinal parts, E E, and side pieces,
F 1 and a panel, G, of less thickness than supports J are fixed to the shelf I and their lower tenoned extremity, K, enters cavities in the top B, and where the shelf I is fixed to the lid 0 by means of hooks and eyes L f, or
leave the same flush on its inner side, and
thereby allow of its being folded down upon the top B, in which position the furniture will resemble the usual refrigerator.
The advantages derived from my peculiar construction of this article of furniture may be stated as follows: First, the combined refrigerator and sideboard possesses allthe advantages of the two separate articles second, it is far less costly than the aggregate cost of said furniture, and but little in advance of that of a refrigerator of like size and finish; third, it occupies less space in an apartment; fourth, in shipping, the article occupies no more space than a refrigerator; fifth, when desired to be discontinued in use as a combined sideboard and refrigerator it can be readily accomplished; and, lastly, the article forms a very neat, substantial, and ornamental piece of household furniture.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure tome by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A combined refrigerator and sideboard consisting, essentially, of the usual ice-box A, having the top B and the auxiliary top 0, said top 0 being provided with a depression, II, and having the shelf I with its supports J removably affixed, whereby the said top 0, when closed, conceals the sideboard-fixtiu'es,
as and for the use and purpose set forth and described.
2. The combined refrigerator and sideboard herein described, consisting, essentially, of the usual ice-box A, having the top B, the auxiliary top 0, provided with the depression H, and the shelf 1, with its supports J, said supports and shelf being hinged to the auxiliary top 0, whereby said top 0, when closed, conceals the sideboard-fixtures I and J, as and for the object stated.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereto set my hand and aflixed my seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
