SHAWL-STRAP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,748, dated February 17, 1880.

Application filed December 29, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

y Be it known that I, J OHANNA Voos, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have in- `a` fixed handle, areelshaft mounted inthe fra1ne,a hand-crank upon the reel-shaft carrying a stop-pin adapted to engage with holes or sockets in the frame, and two or more looped straps attached to the reel-shaft so'that the frame may be held with one hand while the reel-shaft is turned with the other for the purpose of winding up the straps or unwinding the same, thereby clasping or releasing the package, and when the straps have been properly adjusted the shaft may be `checked `by means of the stop-pin, so as to hold fast the straps.

In the drawings, the letterA designates the frame, and `B the handle, `the latter being formed on the upper "part of the frame, and the whole being cast in one piece, of metal, or t made in any other desired manner.

C is the reelshaft mounted in the frame A, and D the hand-crank for turning the shaft, the crank being situated on one end of the shaft, where the latter projects from the frame, as shown in Fig. l.

The crank D carries a stop-pin, E, which slides through the crank and in this example forms the crank-handle, and in an appropriate part of the frame A is formed a series of holes or sockets, j', of suitable size and shape to allow the stop-pin E to engage therewith.

G G are the looped straps attached to the shaft C. These straps are of equal length, and are preferably arranged to pass respectively t through two slots, h, in the bottom ofthe frame A, while, for their attachment to the shaft C, the latter is provided with two slots, t', one at or near each end. In the lower or loop ends ofeaoh of the straps G G, l. place'aloose ring, j, or other similar device, to facilitate the grasping of the straps at that point.

In applying my invention to use the straps G G are un wound from the shaft O either by turning the shaft or simply drawing the straps therefrom, and the package is placed within them. The shaft O is then turned so as to wind up the straps until the package is clasped between the straps and the bottom of the frame `A, when the stop-pin E is pushed in toward the frame A, so as to enter one of the holes j'. ln this manner the shaft G is checked or held stationary' and the straps G G are securely held around the package. Then, when it is desired to release the package, it is only necessary to release the shaft and unwind` the straps to a sufficient extent.

The fixed handle B forms a convenient me diuln for holding the frame A in turning the shaft O to wind or unwind the straps G G, as well as a medium to support the whole in carrying a` package, while the stop pin E is adapted to check the shaft at any point.

If seen t, the end part of the frame A, containing the holes or sockets f, may bemade of sufficient width to allow the arrangement of the holes or sockets in a circle, instead of portions of a circle, as in the example shown.

I am aware of the existence ofa shawl-strap in which two looped straps are wound up by turning the handle, and suoli not being within the scope of my invention I disclaim the same.
