ARTICLE-CARRIER.
useful improvements in article carriers.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an article carrier in the form of a hand grip that includes a pair of spaced straps or elastic'bands that are adapted to surround an article to be carried and tightened about the article to be held in such position by devices associated with the grip.
A further object of the invention is to prov1de 2111,211131616 carrier in the form of a vhand grip with straps that are adapted to surround an article and wound upon a shaft supported by the hand grip with locking means for the shaft to prevent the rotation '25 of the same and unwinding of the strap.
lVith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating 5 characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand grip built in accordance with the present invention, with one of the straps removed from the supportbetter to illustrate the construction of the ends of the plate. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the same showing in section the detailed construction of the strap supporting shaft and locking plate, with the locking pin .for the plate in locked position in full lines and in unlocked position in dotted lines. Fig. 3 1s a horizontal sectional view of the same, and
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the locking pin.
According to my invention, there is pro-' vided an. article carrier in the form of a hand grip including a supporting frame that is U-shaped in side elevation and carrying at the upper ends thereof a handle. A shaft is journaled longitudinally of the Specification of Letters Patent.

frame and has fixed thereto a locking plate including side flanges to which the attaching straps are connected. A locking pin is carried by the lower end of the frame and is adapted to be moved in a position to engage the plates to prevent rotation of the plates and supporting shaft and arrest the winding or unwinding movement of the attach ing straps.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates the base of the frame and 11 the end walls thereof, being U-shaped in side elevation and having connected to the up per ends of the end members 11, a hand grip 12 that is looselv mounted on the end wall connecting rod 13.
A shaft 14: is journaled longitudinally in the end walls 11 while one end thereof projects from one of the end walls to provide an operating crank handle 15 by which the shaft is revolved. A lockingplate is mounted on the shaft, 1A and tubular hub portion 16 that is mounted on the shaft 1% as indicated in Figs. 2and 3 and'is held relatively immovablethereto by the transverse connecting pins 17. A pair of laterallv-extending flanges or side plates 18 are carried bv the central hub portion 16 and are provided adjacent each end thereof with longitudinallv-extending slots 19.
An article carrving tape 20 or band is associated with each end of the plates 18 and mav be either elastic orinelastic. the ends of the band being received in the plate openincludes the central ings 19 and secured in such position in an} suitable manner. as by stitching the overlapped ends while the unwound portion of the tape passes through similar openings 21 formed in the base member 10 of the frame, the said openings being adiacent the ends of the base and lying beneath the plate openings 19. A ring 22 is carried bv each tape 20 at the looped portion thereof which may be grasped bv'the hand to be unwound in releasing the carrier from the package. Means is provided to arrest mo ement of the shaft 14: and plates 18 and includes a pin 23 that is formed bv bending a piece of wire upon itself with the bent end swaged in a manner to provide a pointed pro ecting end 24 as indicated in Fig. 4 while the free ends of the pin 23 are angularlv bent as at 25 to be freelv received in keepers 26 carried bv the base wall 10 of the frame. The pointed projecting end 24 of opening 27, at which pin 23 is adapted to be received opening 27 provided in the central portions of the plates 18 to prevent the shaft l-i and plates 18 from revolving and subsequently unwinding the straps 20.
When it is desired that the carrier be positioned on an article or package, the right hand plate as shown in Fig. 2 may be slightly elevated by operating the crank handle 15 to remove the pointed projecting end Q l of the locking pin from the engaged time the said locking pin may be moved on its pivotal connection 25 to the dotted line position as shown. The tape or band 20 may then be lengthened as desired to facilitate the positioning of the same upon a package and the crank 15 may then be operated to tighten the tape to the desired tension, at which time the locking 3i may be moved upwardly into position to engage a selected opening 27 in either of the plates 18 and arrest the unwinding movement of the tape.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof Will be readily apparent and While the form of the invention herein shown and described is What is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What- I claim as new is 1. An article carrier comprising a U-shaped frame and a handle portion, a
the locking in a selected shaft journaled longitudinally of the frame, a crank handle carried by one end of said shaft, a tubular hub mounted on said shaft ,1
side plates carried by said hub, there being openings formed in the ends of said plates, a tape connected at its ends Within said openings, there being open- Within said frame,
ings in the base wall of the frame through a locking pin pivotally carried by said frame, there being censaid plates which the tapes extend,
trally-position openings in adapted to receive the end of the locking pin to prevent unwinding movement of the tapes. 7 2. An article carrier comprising a frame,
a revolving plate carried thereby, tapes care ried by said plate, means for revolving said" plate, a locking having the bent a proyecting point pivotally carried by sald pin including a bent Wire portion swaged to prov1de frame, there being openings in said plate to 7 receive the projecting point of said'locking )in to n'event unwindin movement of the each end thereof, apair of tapes each se-' cured Within the slots provided in the ends of the plate and the plate carried by the frame.
