4 Claims.
This invention relates to a decorative display article of manufacture and its principal object is to provide a decorative display article composed of a sheet of material scored along parallel intersecting lines and capable of being folded along the score lines to provide alternate raised polygonal portions abutting at their corners and spaced apart by intermediate polygonal bottom portions.-
The invention is particularly applicable for store windows or other display places and may serve as a facing for walls, partitions or other surfaces, or may be assembled to present columns or other objects.
Another object is to provide a decorative display article of this character that is comparatively inexpensive and can be made from strong, relatively heavy paper, for example, paper used for magazine covers. 7
Other objects and advantages will appear in the course of this specification, land with said objects and advantages in viewthis invention consists in the several novel features of construction hereinafter described' an-d claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawings accompanying this specification, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a decorative display article, embodying one form of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof looking in the T direction of the arrow 2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan of a sheet of material (partly broken away) from which the decorative facing of the articleis made.
Fig. 4 is a view looking from below of a portion of said sheet of material, partly folded into its completed form.
Fig. 5 is a plan of a fragment of the display article, partly broken out to illustrate its construction. v
Fig. 6 is a fragmental vertical section, taken on the line 5-6 of Fig. 5. p
Fig. '7 is a View of a fragment of the blank partly folded and looking from below, and
Fig. 8 is a fragmental vertical section taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. '7, and showing the article inverted.
Referring to said drawings, and first to Figs. 1 and 2, the decorative display article shown, comprises a facing consisting of a sheet of paper Hi,
scored as hereinafterset forth and folded upon its-elf along the score lines to provide raised portions designated by the 'character'R, desirably of square outline, with the corners of adjacent raised portions abutting each other, and the sides designated by individual characters.
S of the raised portions joining at their lower edges with bottom portions B, of similar outline as the raised portions. Along the edges of the article the sides S join with triangular bottom sections B The raised portions and bottom portions are disposed alternately in rows, running either diagonally of the sheet in both directions, or in vertical and horizontal directions as desired. A checkerboard appearance is thus imparted to the sheet when scored amifolded as herein described, having alternate raised portions spaced by alternat-e bottom portions. To give strength and rigidity "to the facing it is preferable to glue or otherwise adhesively secure the bottom portions B to a relatively stiff backing strip H, which may comprise cardboard or the like. In Fig. 5 adhesive material i2 is shown forsecuring together the facing and backing material.
In Fig. 3 is illustrated a sheet of the material l0, (partly broken away) from which the facing is formed to provide the design shown in Fig. 1. Thesheet is scored along parallel pairs of diagonal intersecting lines 54, edge to edge of the material. The small squares formed by the pairs of intersecting lines comprise end sections E that are scored along lines l6, running diagonally-of the squares. Desirably the distance between the score lines of each pair is less than the distance between one score line of one pair and the adjacent score line of the next pair, whereby the width of the sections Sis made considerably less than that of the length or breadth of the sections R, B. For the purpose of clarity sections of the score lines l4, l5 will be The sections R bounded by the score lines 0 comprise the raised sections of the facing material; the sections B bounded by the score lines o comprise the bottom sections; The sections CB along the edges of the sheet, are triangular, bounded by the score lines o and the edges of the sheet. The sections S, bounded by the score lines 0, c 6, e, comprise the side sections of the raised portions, and the sections E bounded by the score lines e, e, e, e comprise the end sections which are folded along the score lines l6, and tucked into the spaces under the raised sections as Willbe presently explained. The end sections E along theedges of the sheet are triangular, bounded by the score lines e, e and the edges of the sheet. I
In the completed facing the adjacent corners .of' the sections R. are brought together with all of said sections lying in one and the same plane, and the adjacent corners of sections B are 15, extending from brought together in a lower plane, spaced from the plane of the sections R by the width of the side sections S.
By reference to Fig. 4 (which shows the under side of the sheet) it will be seen that the side sections S of two upper horizontal rows of bottom sections B have been folded down, thereby bringing the raised sections R into a lower plane than the sections B and each end section E has been partially folded together. At this part of the sheet the sections B have not as yet been brought into one plane, but said sections are shown as canted or inclined with respect to each other to show the partly folded end sections E as they appear at this point in the folding operation. The lower end of the sheet is shown as stretched sideways to approximately its original width, with the lowermost bottom sections lying in about their original plane. The end sections designated by E are shown as assuming the form of a low pyramid.
In folding the sheet along the score lines the operation is started at any point and the side sections of any two contiguous sections R (see Fig. 4) are folded up along the score lines, and the adjacent sections B are folded into parallelism with the sections R and at the same time the end sections E are each folded together and tucked into the spaces between the sections B as seen in the upper part of Fig. l. After the folding operation is begun at one end of the sheet, the operations are continued from section to section to the other end of the sheet. It will be seen by reference to either section marked E that when the ends of the side sections are being brought together into an upright condition, that the four parts of the end section first assume the shape of a pyramid, and as the side sections are folded up along the score lines the four parts of the end section double on itself on one of the original diagonal score lines and then the doubled part doubles upon itself along the other original oblique score line and is tucked into the spaces between the sections B.
Describing first the simplest folding operation and referring to the lower left sections here designated by R S and the adjacent end sections E each side section S S is swung upwards on the score lines 0, c, and as a result each end section E is doubled upon itself and folds into the space over section R The bottom section B is folded into a horizontal plane on the score line bringing it into the same plane as the other raised sections B. As a preference the end sections are secured to sides S as by adhesive material or otherwise, so as to stiffen the corners between the sides. Describing the folding operation of sections designated by R R and B the sections R R, are forced toward each other in the directions of the adjacent arrows, thereby folding the adjacent side sections S S upward, and as a result the right and left triangular halves of the square end section E are moved toward each other, the side sections S S" folding the lower triangular parts of the lower half of the end section E upward, thereby causing the right and left halves of the end section to fold into the space over section B as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. As the side sections S S approach their vertical position, the corner of section B approaches the adjacent corner of section B and when fully folded, the score lines e are upright and coincide with each other to form the corners of the four sections R B B B The remaining sections are folded in the same manner until the facing is given the form illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 7 shows the corners of both sections B as approaching each other with the end section B." doubled upon itself, and Fig. 8 shows the same sections in side elevation with the end section partly doubled upon itself.
Fig. 5 illustrates several of the folded end sec-' tions E as projecting into the interiors of the raised portions, R, but it is to be understood that they may be folded against the sides S and se-- cured thereto by adhesive material or otherwise if desired, to tie together the corners of the raised portions. It is also to be understood that all the bottom sections are secured to the backing sheet by adhesive material or otherwise as is desired.
The decorative display article may be used in various ways, and may be made of desirable lengths and widths. For instance, if it is desired to use the article for facing the walls of the room, the required number of them are made of the proper length and placed edge to edge around the room. They may be secured to the permanent walls by tacking them thereto, or in any other suitable manner. If it is desired to form a column, four or any other desired number of the articles may be placed around a common center and suitably secured together.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
