Application April 26, 1940, Serial No. 331,883
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in game devices of the juggling type and the principal object in view is to provide a simply constructed device which may be economically manufactured for low priced trade and which will provide for playing an amusing and simple game of skill for adults as Well as children.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claim are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation,
Figure 3 is a view in longitudinal section, taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 44 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the cup supporting bracket,
Figure 6 is a View in section of the ball,
Figure '7 is a View in top plan of a modified form of the invention, and
Figure 8 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of a further modification of the invention.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, and first to Figures 1 to 6, in the preferred embodiment thereof the device of my invention comprises a handle bar I, preferably straight, and a block-like head 2 of flat form and substantially triangular edge contour at the front end of the handle and to which the handle is suitably secured in a socket 3 provided in one side edge of the head so that the latter extends from the handle in the axis of the latter to provide a fiat top face with an apex part of the head foremost. A tri'angularly arranged series of three concave, substantially semi-circular, sockets 4 are provided in the top face of said head I. A cord 5, elastic or otherwise, as desired, is attached at one end by a staple B to the foremost apex part of said head I, the other end of said cord having a ball I attached thereto by extending the cord through an axial bore 8 in the ball and knotting said cord as shown at 9 in Figure 6 in an enlarged tapered end of said bore. The ball 1 is somewhat smaller than the sockets 4 to be loosely accommodated by the latter. A platelike bracket II is secured at one end to the top face of the head I, by a screw [2, to extend from the rear side of the head over the handle l. A cup l3 having a pedestal M is secured to the rear end of said bracket H to extend upwardly therefrom, and by means of a threaded stud !5 on said standard turned into a threaded aperture l6 provided in said bracket.
Referring now to the game to be played in the use of the preferred embodiment of the invention described, the device is designed to be grasped by the handle I with the cord 5 and ball I pendent from the staple 6 and the head I jerked upwardly by manipulation of the handle I to throw the ball upwardly and then manipulated to catch the ball I in one of the sockets 4. The device is then suitably manipulated to dislodge the ball from said socket and lodge the same in the other sockets 4 successively, after which the device is manipulated to toss the ball out of the last socket and catch the same in the cup I3. Upon a misplay, the player must start over again.
In the modification shown in Figure 7 the device is the same as that previously described with the exception that the cup I3 and bracket II are removed, or eliminated, and the game is played in the same manner but with the play for the cup eliminated.
In the modification shown in Figure 8, a cup I! similar to cup 13 is attached to the handle l8 by a screw 19 on the edge of the pedestal 20 of the cup l1. Otherwise the construction is the same as in the preferred embodiment of the invention.
The device may be made, with the exception of the cord and screws, of wood, Bakelite, metal, or any other desired material.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suflice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention is susceptible of modification in other respects than as disclosed herein, without departing from the inventive concept, and right is reserved to such other modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claim.
What I claim is:
A game device comprising an elongated handle, a substantially flat head extending from one end of the handle for holding a ball in different selected positions thereon to be thrown int-o the air under manipulation of said head by said handle, a ball, a resilient connection between said ball and the front end of the head, a cup in the rear of said head elevated a substantial distance above said handle and head for catching said ball, and a tri-angularly arranged series of sockets in the upper face of said head for establishing the different positions of the ball on the head.
