UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
SAMUEL HANO, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
y COPYING-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION `forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,529, dated February 17,:1880.
` Application filed November 20, 1879.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, SAMUEL HANO, of Boston, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Copying Books; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the y following specication and represented in the i accompanying drawings, of which- AFigure 1 is a transverse section of one of my improved books, such section showing the ari rangement of its leaves of tissue or tracing `readily torn froml thel portion inside or back of them.
The object of the invention is to enable a person,by writing on the upper of the thicker or non-transparent sheets, to produce, by means of a sheet of offset paper laid between the tracing-paper sheetand the lower sheet of the pair of thicker sheets, and having on both sides of it an offsetting coating, one offset fac-simile copy of the writing on the lower sheet and another such offset upon the intermediate or i tracing or tissue paper sheet, the oset of the the `upper of the three sheets, obtains at one latter sheet being on its under side and showing `through the sheet, so as to be read by a person looking at the upper side of such sheet, or that side on which the offset is not made. The offset of the lower sheet will be on its upper face.
Thus `it will be seen that by my invention or improvement the party, by writing upon and the` same time the original written sheet i of thick paper and two copies thereof, one of i whichis on tissue or thinner paper, and the other on paper of the same kind as the upper y sheet. The upper of the three sheets is usually to be ruled or provided with guide-lines for the y writings upon it, besides which it may have any proper heading printed on it, the lowest sheet being without any such lines. The uppermost as well as the lowermost sheet of each consecutive three sheets of the book I provide with a line of punctnres, extending across it from the upper to thelower edge of it, near its junction with theback of the book, such `being to so partially separate from one partof the sheet the portion or part to be written upon, or to receive the writin g or offset copyl thereof, as to enable it to be readily detached from the rest.
In using the' book a person should place the black or offsetting sheet between the thin or medial or tissue leaf' and the unruled or lower of the two thicker or other leaves, and he should write with a pen or hard pencil on` the upper surface of the upper or ruled leaf. This having been done, he is to tear from the book the two thicker of the three leaves, leavin gthe thin or tissue leaf in place.
The two thicker leaves thus separated from the book can be used as the person may desire. Should the book be what is termed in trade an order-book,77 the party or agent who `may take an order for goods will write it upon the upper of the three leaves, and afterward separate the two thicker leaves from the book,
and give one of them to the customer or party giving the order and send the other to the principal or party who is to supply the goods.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, A represents 'a book made as described, a b c being the three leaves of each ofthe consecutive sets of leaves. Of each of such sets, a and c are the non-transparent or thick paper leaves, and b the transparent or tissue or tracing paper leaf. gis the back, and d d the two covers of the book, thc binding of the book being in any of the modes well known.
Fig. 2 shows the sheet a with its rulings cl and line e of punctures, while Fig. 3 shows the sheet c with its line c of punctnres.
I am aware that it is not new, and I do not claim as my invention, to make a copy-book with all its leaves alike in thickness or substantially so, whether such be of transparent or translucent or tissue or of non-transparent or thick paper. Y
I am also aware that before my present invention what are termed copy-books7 have been made with a number of sheets of writing or thick paper and a like number of sheets of thin or tracing or transparent or translucent IOO paper, in which case there would be a sheet of one kind and a sheet of the other kind side by side throughout the book; but in my iinproved book there are only halt the number of tracing-sheets that there is of the thicker or other kind of sheets.
The advantage which my book has over others, as described, is that an individual is enabled to obtain by means of it two thickpaper sheets for each writing, instead of only one of thick or one of thin paper, or thin-paper copies only, as heretofore, generally speaking, it being much preferable to have thick paper for the sheets to be extracted from the book, and to retain in it the tissue or thin paper copying-sheet.
With my improvement the rulin gs or guidelines need be only upon the upper of the three sheets of each set throughout the book-that is, on the sheet to be written upon by the pencil 0r pen.
A manifold order or letter book of my improved kind is of great advantage to merchants or others by affording such means of procuring two removable thick-paper sheets, on one of which the order or writing is made, and the other having upon it a fac-simile of such order or writing, the other fac-simile on the thin or tissue paper sheet remaining undisturbed in the book.
What, therefore, I claim as my invention or improvement is as follows:
1. The new or improved manufacture of copying-book, substantially as described, having a leaf, b, of tissue or tracing paper between each consecutive two leaves, t c, of the thicker or non-transparent paper, such being` for use, in manner as explained, with an offsetting sheet of paper having on'both of its sides the offsetting matter or coating.
2. A copying-book having a leaf of tissue or tracing paper between the leaves of each consecutive pair of thicker or non-transparent leaves of such book, and also having one only of the latter leaves ruled or provided with guide-lines.
3. A copying-book having not only a leaf of tissue or tracing paper between the leaves of each consecutive pair of the thicker or non'- transparent leaves of such book, but having in and across each of the latter leaves aline of punctures arranged in c lose proximity with the back of the book, all being substantially as described.
