Description

NAIL FILE Filed Sept. 8, 1938 ATTORNEYS.
Patented May 27, 194i nuire-n stares rares asians Application September S, i938, Serial No. 228,939
(Cl. E32-756) This invention relates to a nail le and has for one of its objects to provide a simple and yet secure and compact arrangement for securing a handle thereon.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a compact and secure arrangement for positioning the handle on the nail file in such a manner that it may have additional uses.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. l is a top plan view of the combination nail file and knife;
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showin the knife blade moved to open position;
Fig. 4 is a sectional View on substantially line 4 4 of Fig. 2 showing only the joint connection of the nail file with its handle;
Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. l;
Fig. 6 is an elevation with one side of the casing removed and a fragment of the nail file;
Fig. l is a perspective view of the combination back and spring member of the handle;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the secured end of the nail ille with the remainder broken away;
Fig. 9 is a perspective View of one of the casing members of the handle and knife portion;
Fig. l0 is a perspective view of the cover shell.
In the use of implements such as a nail le, it is convenient that a handle be positioned on the file for manipulation thereof, and at times it is exceedingly desirable in the use of a nail le to use some cutting implement such as a knife; and in order that such a knife may be convenient for use, I have provided a knife blade in the handle of the nail le, and I have formed the parts which enable the use of this knife and nail iile so that the parts forming the handle and knife casing cooperate with the secured end of the nail le to hold it firmly in position and yet in an exceedingly compact arrangement, this eing accomplished by the notching of the back and spring portion of the knife forming the handle of the file to provide a space for the reception of the le; and the following is a more detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention, illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished.
With reference to the drawing, l5 designates the nail file portion of this implement which has a pointed free end I6, an abrasive surface Il,
and a secured end portion i3 which is arcuately recessed on opposite sides as at IS and provided with openings 20, 2G adjacent its end.
The handle for this file consists of a back portion 2l shown in perspective in Fig. 7 which is notched or out out as at 22 to a depth 23 on one side to equal the thickness 2 of the file end l2 so that this le end may rest within this notch with its end 25 snugly against the abutment 25 of the notch to locate the le in position. Openings El, 2l register respectively with the openings 2t and 28 in the file end. 0n either side of this back 2l there are casing members 23 which have one side edge 29 aligning and in substantial registry with the edge 3@ of the back 2i. These casing members 28, 28 are also provided with openings 3l, 3 l which register respectively with the openings 2%, 2l and 2t', 2 and receive rivets 32, 32 through these openings to secure the casing members 28, 2S', the bac-k 2l and the file securely in position. Thos casing members 23, 2t are also provided with openings 33, 3i-l which register respectively with openings 35 and 3'8 in the back portion 2l and rivets 3l, 33 pass through these openings to further hold and support the back member 2i in position between the casing members by holding it rigid at one end while leaving its opposite end 3% free.
This backing member 2l while its edge aligns with the edge of the casing as at Zl, is out away as at til to provide a thinner portion of stock fr! intermediate its ends and a cam-like surface d2 adjacent its end. This cut away portion causes the back to be more resilient and at the same time forms a recess ill between the casing parts lit for the reception of the knife blade t3 which is pivoted by the pin it extending through the opening t5 in the knife blade and the openings in the casing members 28, 28. This knife blade has its major portion received in the recess d? provided by the cut away portion iii of the back while its end has a camlike surface i3 to engage the cam 'i2 and cause a iiexing of this back portion 2l when the knife blade is swung about its pivot @il from the position shown in Figs. 1 or 6 to the position shown in 3, this flexing occurring similar to that usually occurring in jack-knife structure.
The Working parts of this device are enveloped by shell cover members it and t9 which are formed of sheet stock with a flange 5@ to extend partly over the edges of the casing and are provided With ngers 5l and 52 at their opposite ends for holding the shell in position on the casing,
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being dened and limited only by the terms of the appended claim.
I claim:
In a device of the character described, a pair of spaced casing members, a back member positioned between said members, and xedly riveted with relation thereto adjacent one end thereof, said back member having the extreme end portion thereof adjacent its fixed end reduced in thickness an amount to provide a space between the casing and said extreme end portion, said extreme end portion being substantially the width of the adjacent portions of the casing members, a le member having an extreme end portion located in said space and of a thickness to substantially fill said space and of a Width to be substantially iiush with the adjacent outer edge surfaces of said back and casing members, and rivets extending through said file member, back, and casing members to hold these parts in fixed relation, and shell cover members enveloping the outer and edge surfaces of said casing members.
