To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. GAL- BRAITH, of Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage-Poles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of car- 'riage-poles that are capable of being adjusted and readily fitted to vehicles of any width; and the object of the invention is to decrease the weight of the poles and make them more durable and eii'ective in their operations.
The invention consists of the combination of a slotted ratchet-faced plate secured to the under side of the carriage-pole, of circle-bars hinged to the rear end of the pole, of adjustable side stays or braces connected by a crossbar that moves between the pole and the slotted plate, and of hinged pole eyes or sockets in the ends ofthe side braces.
In the drawings, A represents a carriagepole, having secured to its under side by bolts,
rivets, or otherwise a longitudinally-slotted plate, B, whose face is ratcheted, as shown at a. A cross'bar, O, is set laterally between the pole A and plate B, and is held by the screwbolt I), while between the nut f of said bolt b and the ratcheted face of the plate B is a Washer, 0, which is provided with teeth that en gage in the depressions of the ratchet-face of the plate B. This cross-bar G connects the forward ends of two curved side stays or braces, D, which spread apart and extend rearward to connect with the thill-clips of the vehicle.
On the rear end of the pole A is a box or socket, E, in which are hinged two circle-bars, F F, that curve laterally and connect by bolts, rivets, welding, or otherwise with the braces D near their free ends, and operate as laterally-adjustable supports to the said braces or stays D. i
G represents a pivoted pole eye or socket tofit in the thi1l-clips,and H is a down wardlyprojecting pin that is designed to enter the cross-bar, to which the whiffletree of the vehi-.
cle is pivoted. The side stays or braces, D D, have suflicient elasticity to permit of their expansion and contraction, or their opening and .closing, within certain limits, so that the device may be adapted to vehicles of different widths.
- If the cross-bar O be'pushed forward in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, the pole-eye ends of the side braces, D. are brought nearer together, so that the device can be applied toa narrovi vehicle, while if the cross-bar G be moved in the reverse direction the ends of the braces D are push ed apart to accommodate the device to a wider-vehicle.
The cross-bar G and braces D are in all cases firmly held in position by the bolt, nut, and washer bfc, or other convenient devices, that operate to hold the said bar to the plate B.
The hinging 01' the circle-bars F F in the socket E gives them the required range of adjustability, that they may adapt themselves to the movements of the side braces, D.
The pivoted pole eye or socket Gr increases the adjustability of the pole.
