` BABY WALKER Filed Feb. 1:5, 1940 2 sheets-Sheet;
MM l 5M Patented May 13, 1941 BABY WALKER William C. Baxter, Rochester, N. Y., assigner to y Trimble Nurseryland Furniture, Inc., Rochester, N. Y., a corporation of New York f Application February 13, 1940, Serial No. 318,775 f Claims.
This invention relates to a baby walker,A with particular reference to the type of construction embodying a base and frame mounted onA rollers or otherwise, and a seat of canvas or suitable ilexible material, and it has for its object to provide a practical and economical construction for supporting the fabric seat.
The invention has todo with the kind of apparatus that utilizes a fabric seat including iront and side portions, and it is a further purpose of the invention to afford a simple construction by which said front and side seat portions can be readily attached to the supporting frame and adjusted toward the front or rear of the frame. i
Another object of the invention is to afford a construction that enables retaining the front'and side seat portions in place on the supporting frame by means of a device that is readily attachable or removable from side arms and Which when in operating position holds said front and side seat portions firmly, while permitting their adjustment forwardly or rearwardly.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts that will appear clearly from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the novel features being pointed out in the claims following the specification.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a baby walker, illustrative of one embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view on the line 4--4 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan View of the supporting frame, partially broken away, showing the relation thereto of the attaching device.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which like reference numerals refer to the same parts throughout the several views, I designates the base of a baby walker provided with rollers 2 and including a supporting frame consisting of upstanding arcuate or arch-shaped metal side arms secured to the base. Each of the side arms is of hollow or channel formation and includes a closed upper or outer Wall 3 and a slot or opening 4 in its lower or inner Wall, While 5 designates retaining flanges or shoulders adjacent to and paralleling said slot or opening 4. These hollow or channel side arms just described function to retain the attaching device on which the front and side fabric seat 'portions are mounted in the manner that will now bel described in detail. Y "l 6 designates a rigid back frame secured to the base I and to the side arms, and 'I designates the back seat portion of canvas or other eiible material that is secu-red over andheldby the back frame'l, whileV 8 designates opposite side seat portions and 9 the front seat portion which are detachably and adjustably secured to thefside arms. YTo accomplish this, the side seat portions 8 are provided with'loops Ill and front seat por-Y tion 9 is provided with a loop II that engage'po'rtions of the'attachingdevice.
The attaching device, which is Vpreferably formed of wire to permit; its being sprung into position, is of generally U-shaped formation, and comprises a central orl'ateral portion I2 which passes through the loop I.I of the `front seat portion. Said central "portion I2 isv bent upwardly and inwardly at its ends, as shown in Fig. 3, to aord lugs I3 located within the channels of the side arms and overlying the inner flanges 5. The wire attaching device is thence bent outwardly and rearwardly, affording the leg portions I4 which engage the loops It in the flexible side seat portions 8, while at the rear of said leg portions I4, the wire attaching device is provided with reversely beni; terminal portions I5 that overlie both the inner and outer flanges 5 of the channel side arms.
With this construction, the side and front seat portions are held firmly by the attaching device which is thus engaged with the side arms and held firmly thereby against accidental removal, while at the same time the attaching device, carrying the front and side portions of the flexible seat, may be slid forwardly or backwardly of the side arms by engaging the loop II of the front seat portion, surrounding the lateral portion I2 of the attaching device, and moving the same forwardly and backwardly, causing a corresponding sliding movement of the leg portions I4 of the attaching device and of the side seat portions carried thereby.
The attaching device is secured in place by rst passing one end through the loop portion II of the front seat portion, and thence passing the leg portions I4 through the loops of the side seat portions, after which the lugs I3 and reversely bent portions I5 can be readily sprung into locking engagement with the channel side arms. The attaching device can be removed from the side arms, if desired, by engaging the free ends of the reversely bent portions I5 and springing the wire sufficiently to disengage said portions l5 and lugs I3 from engagement with the underlying flanges of the channels of the side arms, permitting the attaching device to be dropped downwardly away therefrom.
While the invention has been described with reference to the particular construction herein shown, it is not confined to such precise arrangement, and this application is intended to cover any modifications or departures that may come within the scope of the following claims or the invention defined thereby.
I claim:
1. In a baby walker, the combination with a back frame, of arch-shaped hollow metal side arms which have their bottom walls slotted to apfford channels with overhanging flanges adjacent to said slots, a flexible seat having a back portion secured to said back frame and front and side portions, and a U-shaped attaching device having a central portion connected to said front seat portion and leg portions connected to said side seat portions, said leg portions having their ends located and slidable -in said channels and supported on said anges.
2. Inv a baby walker, the combination with a back frame, of arch-shaped hollow metal side arms which have their bottom walls slotted to afford channels with overhanging flanges adjacent to said slots, a flexible seat having a back portion secured to said back frame and front and side portions, and a U-shaped attaching device having a central portion connected to said front seat portion and leg portions connected to said side seat portions, said leg portions inil cluding locking instrumentalities which are 1ocated in said channels and overlie said flanges adjacent to the slots of the side arms.
3. In a baby walker, the combination with a back frame, of arch-shaped hollow metal side arms which have their bottom walls slotted to alord channels with overhanging flanges adjacent to said slots, a exible seat having a back portion secured to said back frame and front and side portions, and a U-shaped attaching device having a central portion connected to said front seat portion and leg portions connected to said side seat portions, said leg portions having means at opposite ends thereof which are located in said channels and overlie said flanges adjacent to the slots of the side arms.
4. In a baby walker, the combination with a back frame, of arch-shaped hollow metal side arms which have their bottom walls slotted to aord channels with overhanging anges adjacent to said slots, a flexible seat having a back portion secured to said back frame and front and side portions, and. a U-shaped attaching device having a central portion connected to said front seat portion and leg portions connected to said side seat portions, each of said leg portions having a lug at its inner end which projects upwardly through the slot of a side arm and overlies the inner flange thereof and a reversely bent portion at its outer end which extends across the slot and overlies both the inner and outer flanges adjacent to the slot.
5. In a baby walker, the combination with a back frame, of hollow metal side arms having their bottom walls slotted to afford channels with overhanging flanges adjacent to said slots, a flexible seat having a back portion secured to said back frame and front and side portions, and a U-shaped attaching device having a central portion connected to said front seat portion and leg portions connected to said side seat portions, said leg portions extending through said slots and being positioned in said channels and slidably supported on said flanges.
