Delaware, in -the county-of Delawareand-State 1 of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Tripod Head for "Leveling-Instruments, ---of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a device for the better adjustment or leveling of surveyors and engineers field-instruments.
The invention may be described asrfollows:
From near the periphery of a horizontal plate attached to and supported by legs, after the manner of tripodsfor leveling-instruments, three equidistant rigid rods converge downward and pass through a smaller plate-that is secured to them by nuts screwed on their ends or in some other safe way. Centrally secured upon the upper face of this plate is a short upward-projecting standard, on two opposite sides of which are pivoted two flat bars that V project upward through a central opening in the upper horizontal plate and support there an oblong metal box or frame that is without top or bottom. Two bars or plates are secured immovably and horizontally opposite each other across the edges of these'fiat bars, and pivoted between them is a square bar that projects upward centrally through the oblong box and has a screw-thread cut on its end above the box. Two opposing screws supported by posts on the upper horizontal plate are applied to the opposite long sides'of the box, while two like screws pass through the ends of the box, and are applied to the square bar, that projects through it, and that is intended as a support for the leveling-instruments.
In the drawings, A represents the upper horizontal plate, provided with rectangular opening a, up through which the two fiat bars 13 B project, carrying between them the oblong box 0. The ends of these bars may be fashioned to make the sides or ends of the box, or the latter may be separately constructed and secured to them.

M M are the supporting-legs of the device, pivoted to the rectangular lugs N, that support the upper horizontal'plate.
It will be observed that in this device are two sets of leveling-screws, and the motions produced by them are independent of each other, so that when the instrument is leveled over one set it remains so while being leveled over the other set. By this independence of motions the binding of the leveling-screws, that is so common with ordinary tripod-heads, is entirely obviated; and as the binding of the screws is a source of a great deal of trouble to the operator in many ways, both because of the consequent breaking of the screws and because of the straining of parts of the tripod head, the entire removal of such troubles by the use of this device will recommend it to all who use leveling-instruments.
The device possesses other advantages that will readily be recognized by surveyors and engineers, and besides ,is exceedingly simple and easily operated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. For leveling-instruments, thcflat bars B B, oblong box 0, rods 1) D, lower plate, E, standard F, square bar G, plates H H, pins 0 and d, posts I I, and screws K K and L L, constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of standard F, bars B B, box 0, bar G, plates H H, and pins 0 and d, substantially as herein shown anddescribed.
3. The combination of plate A, provided with opening a, with rods D 1), plate E, and standard F, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The plate A, provided with the rectangular opening a, in combination with the posts I I and screws K K, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. The'legs M M and lugs N N, in combina tion with the plate A, having a rectangular opening, a, the box 0, and the bars B B and G, substantially as herein shown, and for the purpose described.
6. In the construction of a leveling-instrument, the flat bars B B, pivoted to the standard F by the pin 0, and supporting the box 0, substantially as herein shown and described.
