UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
CHARLES ALEXANDER THOMSON, OF EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND.
APPARATUS FOR HOLDINGCAKES DURlNG THE PROCESS OF iClNG.
ifhiUIkiCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,788, dated December 23, 1902. 1 Application filed June 26, 1902. Serial No. 113.318. lillomodel.)
do all whom, it 7111!. mun/rant:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ALEXANDER THOMSON, engineer, of Gorgie Mains, Slateford road, Edinburgh, Scotland, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Apparatus for Holding Cakes During the Process of Icing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to revolving stands as used by confectioners and bakers for placing cakes and such 'like on during the proc ess of icing and ornamentation, and has for its object to improve the construction, and thereby increase the utility, of said revolving stands. i
This apparatus made in accordance with my invention admits of the cakes being safely and easily manipulated by its means, so that it is possible for the operator to have the cake set in position for icing top upward, edge upward, or bottom upward, as he may desire. Thusa higher class of work may be done more easily and in less time by means of this invention than with the ordinary icingstands hitherto made.
in order that my invention may be properly understood and readily carried into effeet, I have hereunto appended one sheet of drawings, of which Figure 1 is aside elevation of the appara-.
tus. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan through lines K L drawn through Fig. 1. Fig. is a front View section through lines G H drawn through Fig. 1.
In carrying myinvention into effect 1 construct a frameAof'iron brother suitable material, preferably malleable cast-iron. .The frame A supports a turn-table ll at the end of its arm 0.. A movable arm a swings on a stalk or pin a. This stalk or pin a may be cast on the frame A or may he made sepa rately of mild steel or wrought-iron or other suitable metal and fixed to frame A by being screwed into it or otherwise.
The aforementioned arm a is bored at the end to receive a. rod 0, to which is attached a turn-table 6, whose position may be altered by raising or lowering the rod 0, which is held in the desired position by the screw of or other convenient means. i
The aforementioned frame A,with the movable arm, adjustable rod, and turn-tables, is
mounted on a pivot 01 of the adjustable boss I) and maybe revolved around the pivot d and fixed in any position around the pivot by means of the screw a or otherwise.
Four of the most useful positions for the frame are given by holes bored in the aforementioned pivot d, and the frame A is automatically set to any one of these positions by allowing a spring-bolt a" to enter any one of holes.
On theaforesaid movable arm a a. plate with projection a forms a stop against another plate a which is cast on the frame A. This admits of the turn-tables being brought to the same center line instantly. The movable arm a is keptin this position by a bolt o entering a hole in the aforesaid plate a In order that the cakes may be properly sustained between the aforesaid turn-tables when set edge upward, detachable disks having four or more flat blades extending upward at right angles to them are attached to either or both turn-tables by means of small spring-bolt b entering a perforated lug on bladed disk M, as indicated in Fig. 1.
Detachable plain disks of various diame' ters to suit diii'erent sizes of cakes are also employed, either in conjunction with or Without the aforesaid bladed disks.
I claim 1. In apparatus for manipulating cakes during the process of sugar-icing or ornamentation the combination of a frame having two arms with two turn-tables facing eachother and in the same center line, the said frame being mounted on a horizontal pivot so that it may be revolved in a vertical plane, thus admitting of the cakes being instantly set in position top upward, edge upward, or bottom upward as desired, substantiallyas and for the purposes hereinbefore described and illustratcd on the accompanying sheet of drawings.
2. In apparatus for manipulating cakes during the process of sugar-icing or ornamenta-tion, the combination of a frame mounted frame, and fitted with means whereby theturn-table Whirl: it supports may be instantly brought facing opposite to and in the same center line with the turntable which is sup IOO , and a turn-table secured in the socket of said portedby the other arm,'substantially as and for'the pnrposeshereinhefore described and illustrated on the accompanying sheet of drawings.
3. In an'apparatus of the character described, the combination with a revolnble frame, an adj ustableand a fixed arm extendin from'the frame, a turn-table secured to one of said fixed arms, a rod having a socket and adjustably secured to the adjustable arm rod, detachable disks secured to said turntables constructed to hold a cake in position on said tables.
4:. In an anparatus 0f :the character described, the combination with a revoluble frame, an adjustable and a fixed arm extending from the frame, aturn-tahle secured to one of said fixed arms, a rod having a socket and adjnstably secured to the adjustable arm and a turn-table secured in the socket of said rea detachable disks secured to one or both or said tables, and guards projecting upwardat a. right angle from the face of said disks to hold a cake against displacement. I
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES ALEXANDER THOMSON.
