UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BEowN,0E GREEN POINT, NEW YORTK.
BARREL-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,137, dated February 3, 1880.
Application filed November 22, 1879.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAMjBRO N, of Green Point, in the county of Kings and State of New York, hai c invented a new and useful Improvement in Barrel=Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation taken through the line as :r, Fig. 2,
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention is an improvement in the class of barrel-lifters consisting of a hoop and two clamps, the latter being pivoted to opposite sides of the hoop and provided withham dies.
The improvement consists in the construction of the lifter, whereby it is rendered selfsupporting or adapted to retain its place on a barrel standing on end.
A are two pairs of triangular handles,'each pair being connected by a hand-piece, B, and a curved bar, 0. In the lower arms of the handles A are formed mortises E to receive a band, D, which passes around the barrel, and is held in place by keys, set-screws, or other suitable means, as shown at F in Figs. land 3. The band D may be made in one or two pieces, and the device may be adjusted to different-sized barrels by loosening the fastenings F.
Each pair of handles A may be made in one piece, and the shape may be varied as desired, so long as the said handles A have a bearingsurface, 0, to rest against the barrel and apertures to receive a band, D. With this construction, when the device is left free, the band D will hold the lower arms of the handles A in a vertical position, the upper arms provided with the bearing-surfaces (J inclining inward, and the arms provided with the hand-pieces B inclining outward, as shown in Fig. 3.
When the deviceis to be applied to a barrel the upper arms of the handles A are drawn outward, so that the bearing-surfaces C may pass down along the sides of the barrel.
The band-D is'elastic and tends to hold the clamps G pressed inward toward each other. Hence the outward movement of the upper partsof the handles A gives a twist or spring to the said band, so that its elasticity will hold thebearing-surfaces O pressed against the sides of the barrel with sufficient force to retain the device in place upon whatever part of the barrel it may be placed. When thus arranged an upward strain upon the handles puts a lateral strain upon the band and brings the bearing-surfaces against the sides of the barrel with sufi'icient force to admit of the bar rel being raised and carried by the'handles.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentf The improved barrel-lifter, consisting of the elastic band or spring D and the triangular handles, which are fixed on said spring, as shown and described, so that the spring tends to throw the clamps inward or toward each other, as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM. BROWN.
