A PPARATusFo-R OPERATINGROLLER-GATES.
SPECIFICATION fo g part of Letters I ate nt' lfTo. 22 4,121, dated February 3, 1880.
ppli a i n fi led October 11,1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ALLEN, of snverton, in the countyofMarion and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Operating Roller-Gates, of
which the following is a specification.-
Figure l is' a perspective view of my improvement attached to a double-roller gate.- Fig.'2 is a side elevation of the gate. Fig. 3 is a detail section taken through the line a: as, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detailedview of thedeviee for operatingthe latch. v
The object of this invention .is to furnish an improved apparatus for attachment to rollergates, thejuse of which. willenable a person ,7
in a vehicle or upon horseback to open and close the gate.
The invention consists in providing a rollergate with an endless chain or ropeand' a series of pulleys so arranged that the movement of the said chain or rope in one direction willj'open the gate a'nd its movement in the other direction will close the gate.
A'and B are two pairs of posts, set at the opposite sides of the roadWayandat-such a distance apart that the parts 0 Dof the gate 'may pass between them. E'F are posts set the gate, and which carry the gate as it is opened and closed. The upperends of the posts A B E F are-connected by a cross-bar, J, which is madewide, to serve as a cap to protect the operating parts of the mechanism. The lower part of the gate is kept from lateral movement by. being placed between the adjacent edges of two bridge-planks secured to bed-pieces set in the roadway. At one side of the roadway, and at a suitable distance from the posts A, are set, two .posts, K. To the inner sides of the upper parts of the posts K are attached pulleys L, around-whichpasses an endless chain or rope, M.
, The chain or rope-M, in passing between the pulleys'L, passes over a pulley, N,- pivoted to the cap-bar J. The other part of the chain or rope M, in passing from the pulleys L, passes around two pulleys, O, pivoted to the posts A, and around a single pulley, P, pivotedto the posts B: The two parts of the chain or rope M that cross the roadway are connected with the arms I, attached to the inner corners of the parts 0 D of the gate, so that the said parts 0 D may be drawn toward each other when the chain or rope M is drawn in one direction, and. from each other when the said chain orrope is drawn in the other direction. The chain or rope M is connected with the arm I of one of the parts 0 D of the gate by a long loop or keeper, Q, attached to the said chain or rope, and through which the end of the said arm passes, so that the rope orchain may move a little distance before it moves the said part of the gate. To the upper end of the arm I{ is attached a pin, X, or other stop,
to prevent the loop Q from being drawn from the said arm I when power is applied to the rope or chain M. The chain or ropeM iseonnectedwith the other part of the gate bythe three-armed lever B, which is pivoted to the arml The upper arm of the lever B is fastened tofthe rope or' chain M. To the lower arm of the lever B is attached the upper end of a rod, S, the lower end of which is attached to the gate-latch T, so that the said latch may be raised from its catch U by the movement of the said lever B; The movement of the lever B islimited by a pin, V, attached to the arm 1 and which passes through a slot, W, in the said lever It, as shown in Fig. 4.
With this construction-the loop Q'and the slot W allow the rope M to move a sufficient distance to. raise the latch T before the said rope M acts upon the parts 0 D of the gate.
To the chain or rope M, upon the opposite sides of the gate, are attached handles X, of rope, wood, or other suitable material, for convenience in operating the said rope to open and close the gate.
I have described my invention as applied to a double-roller gate; but it is equally applicable to a single-roller gate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 2. The combination of the arm I and loop 10 ters Patent, is Q with the gate 0 and rope or chain M, sub- 1. The combination of the loop Q, the slotstantially as herein shown and described. ted lever B, rod S, and latch T with endless chain or rope M and gate 0 D, substantially HENRY ALLEN. as herein shown and described, so that the chain or rope M may move sufficiently to raise Witnesses the latch '1 before the gate is acted upon, as JAMES C. BUTTON, set forth. I
SETH R. HAMMER.
