Patented May 6, 1941 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHAIR William A. Burke, South Bend, Ind., assignor to Oriental Wrought Iron Works, Inc., South Bend, 11141., a. corporation of Indiana.
Application camber--12, 1940, Serial No. 360,995
2 Claims. (01. 155-164) My invention relates to improvements in chairs. The invention is designed with the principal object in view of providing a simply constructed chair equipped with a yieldingback contributing to comfort of .the user and which is adapted for all-around use and is strong and economical to" manufacture.
To the accomplishment of the above, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a :preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, set forth in detail are fixed in any desired manner to the described seat forming supports 5, 8 and 9 on the one hand,
- and to the post forming stretches 6 on the other in the succeeding description, and defined in the claims appended hereto.
In said drawing: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation, and. Figure 3 is a view. in top plan. Referring to the drawing by numerals, in the preferred embodiment thereof, my improved chair comprises a pair of side members lof tubular form and resilient metal, each embodying a supporting loop including front and rear downwardly converging side stretches 2, 3, forming a front leg, a downwardly bowed stretch 4 connecting said front and rear stretches 2, 3, and forming a' foot for said leg, a laterally and inwardly extending stretch 5 forming a continuation of the front stretch 2 and a seat support, and an upright substantially straight stretch 6 comprising an extension of the-rear stretch 3 rising above the lateral stretch and forming a back supporting post.
The side members I are connected together by a yoke member I, also of tubular form and resilient metal and which is of substantially inverted U-shape. The yoke member I straddles the side members I and embodies a straight front stretch 8 extending across the front stretches 2 at the level of the lateral stretches i, and a pair of side stretches"! extending along the outer sides of.
the lateral stretches 5 parallel therewith to form seat supports and curving from said stretches 5 downwardly and rearwardly across the rear stretches 3 to form rearwardly bowed rear legs for the chair.
The side stretches I are welded .to the lateral stretches 5, the welding. not being'shown, and
free to flex forwardly and rearwardly to provide an easy yielding back rest.
Suitable seat and back members I0, I I, of cushhand.
As will now be seen, my invention provides a strong chair construction which will afford the maximum comfort at a minimumcost of manufacture and which is practically indestructible, and adapted for use either outdoors or indoors.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufiice to impart a clear understanding of my invention-with- V out further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susing an upstanding extension forming a back supporting post, and a yoke member of tubular form and resilient metal, straddling said side members and Having a pair of side stretches fixed to the side stretches of said side members and extending downwardly and rearwardly across said rear stretches to form rear legs'for the chair.
2. A chair comprising a pair of side members of tubular form and resilient metal each embodying a supporting loop including front and rear side stretches conversin downwardly and. being connected to form a front leg. the front stretch -having a lateral inwardly projecting extension forming a seat support, and the rear stretch having an upstanding'extension forminga back supporting post, anda yoke member of tubular form Y and resilient metal, straddling said side members and having a patr ot side'stretches fixed to the extensions of said side members and extending downwardly and rearwardly across said rear stretches to form rear legs for the chair, the
detached from the rear stretches 3, the latter together with the post forming stretches 6 being" extensions of said side members being detached from the rear stretches of said side members and the side stretches of the yoke being detached from the rear stretches of said side members whereby said, rear stretchesand nupstanding extensions thereof are free to flex back and forth. 1
