Description

J.B. BRUCE. Plow.
No. 223,987.' Patented Feb. 3, 1880.
l m/ttag. l l v K .Zn minfi- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. BRUCE, OF SUNNY DALE, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF `OF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM M. SUMMERS, OF CLEOPATRA, MISSOURI.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of lLetters Patent No. 223,987, dated February 3,.I88.
l Application led J une 30, 1879. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. BRUCE, of Sunny Dale, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bein ghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention consists in a peculiar-shaped standard for supporting the mold-board and other parts of the plow, and in a brace-bar arranged on the land-side of the plow and attached to the standard and beam, and in other mechanism, all of which will be hereinafter fully explained.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow constructed according to my invention. Fig. .2 is a side elevation of the casting which supports the `mold-board and other attachments. v
b is the casting, of peculiar shape, made to support the mold-board and otherattachments. It is formed of the front standard, bf, and rear standard, b2, which have their upper ends connected by the plate b3.
Projecting horizontally7 and laterally from the upper edge of the plate b3 is the ange b4, made in such form as to it snugly against the under side of the beam a, to which it is fastened by bolts c.
The lower end of the front standard, b,is inclined forward, so that i-t will have the same pitch as the front edgel of the mold-board.
The rear standard is slightly inclined to the rear, and' has journaled in the lower end a small roller, d, placed on the land-side of the plow. Y
VThe mold-board e may be made in a sepa rate piece of proper form and secured to the front edge of the standard b by bolts b5. AWhen thus made it may be removed at will, or it may be cast with the standard b', as taste may dictate.
f is a brace made in the angular form shown.
The forward end of its under arm is secured to the lower end of the standard b', while its central or elbow portion is secured to the lower end of the standard b2, and the `upper end of its rear or vertical arm is secured to the beam a in rear of the fastenings of the casting b.
To the inner side of the brace-bar f is secured a roller, g, which may be removed and set at any desired point along said bar, which is provided with bolt-holesf for this purpose.
The rollergis designed to run inthe furrow and serve as a fulcrum or rest by which the set of the point maybe regulated. It also aids in preserving the set of the point, so that it will run at a uniform depth at all times.
The casting b is, by preference, made in a separate piece, having the mold-board and other parts secured thereto, as indicated. f
1f desired the moldboard e may be detached, and a shovel having suitable lugs on its rear side may be attached.
This improvement is designed more especially for light work, such as marking ground for planting, or where shallow plowing only is required.
The parts may all be made light. The rollers d and g give steadiness to the movements of the device, and the brace, secured as described, gives strength to the arrangement of parts and transfers to the beam any severe strain or shock given to the front standard, b.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a plow, the casting b, constructed with the standards bl b2, top bar, b3, and horizontal iiange b4, and provided with the roller d, `journaled in the lower end of the rear standard,
d, the brace-barf, secured in a horizontal position to the lower ends of the standards b b2, and' having its rear end extended and inclined Vupward and secured to the rear end of the Witnesses:
WILLIAM FINN, MYRON E. GooDELL.
