Description

WLTILEEEEE- L. LING. Plow.
Patented July 2,1878.
I'nv 511C 1 NFETERS, PHOTO-LJTMOGRAPHER WASHINGTON l) C Urrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZO LING, OF PULASKI, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEM ENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,657, dated July .2, 1878; application filed May 14, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZO LING, of Pulaski, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in plows; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, whereby a better, more easily adjustable, and a more efficient plow is produced, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
Figure l is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
(t represents the beam, which is cast in a single piece with the standard 1), part c, to which the land-side d is secured, and a part to receive the point g and mold-board h. Upon the rear edge of the standard is formed the extension t, and through the inner end of this extension is made the slot f, through which passes the bolt 0, which unites the inner ends of the handles together. To each side of the extension is bolted an arm, I, to the outer ends of which the handles m are bolted. These arms serve as fulcrums, upon which the handles move.
By loosening the bolt 0 and bearing down or raising up upon the handles the outer ends can be raised or lowered to any desired degree to suit the convenience of the person plowing.
By means of the construction here shown both handles can be adjusted by loosening but a single bolt, and no additional parts are necessary to the plow except the two arms I.
The front end of the mold-board does not reach to the front sharp edge of the standard, while the front cutting-edge of the point g projects some distance in advance of it. In the space formed between these two parts is placed the cutter a, which is secured to the standard by means of the bolt q, as shown. This cutter is so formed that its front edge forms a continuation of the front edge of the point, and has a projection, s, upon its lower top of the point. As a flange on its outer side catches over the front edge of the standard, as the projection 8 holds it at the bottom, and as the bolt q secures it in place, it will readily be seen that the cutter cannot be displaced by any usage of the plow, but can be readily removed for the purpose of being sharpened.
The part c of the casting is recessed, so as to'receive the land-side proper, and this landside projects some three or four inches outward beyond the side of the beam, so as to throw the beam in between the land-side and the mold-board. By placing the beam in this position it runs parallel to the furrows, the draft of the horses is in a straight line with the beam, the plow runs steadier, draws easier, and there is less danger of breaking the beam than there is when the beam is put on in the usual manner.
I ain aware that adjustable handles for plows are not new, and also that handles have been secured to wings cast on the standard; and I do, therefore, not claim such as my invention. In such latter case, as known to me, it either wing should become broken, which is often liable to happen, it will be not only great trouble but serious inconvenience and expense to repair the plow.
In my invention the wings or links I are made separate and detachably connected to the plow-extension 'i, so that either or both of them can be easily and quickly removed and others substituted in case of breakage. The extension i being recessed, the said links are held firmly in their places thereon by a single bolt, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a plow having the handles adjustably secured to the standard, the standard b, formed with the arm or extension 1', which is longitudinally recessed on both sides, and the links 1 Z, detachably secured in the recesses on said arm, in combination with the handles m m and the fastening-bolts, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day of May, 1878.
