A ttorney Patented Apr. 15, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SUPPORT Newell G. Hurlbut, Joplin, Mo. Application February 9, 1840, Serial No. 318,163
3 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in supports for decorative and representative floral displays at funerals.
The instant invention is designed as an improvement over that disclosed in my U. S. Patent No. 2,007,496, dated July 9, 1935, the principal object in view being to provide a lightweight support for a floral design representative of a broken circle, of well-known significance, and which may be readily taken apart and packed incompact form for carrying, quickly set up, is stable, sturdy, adjustable as to height, and inexpensive to manufacture.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, set forth in detail in the succeeding description, and defined in the claims appended hereto.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a View in front elevation of the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a View in top plan,
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in rear elevas tion illustrating the manner in which the ring sections are secured together and drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 5 is a view in vertical section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale, and
Figure 6 is a view in horizontal section taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 3.
Describing the invention in detail, with reference to the drawings by numerals, the instant support comprises a base structure including a tubular socket member I upstanding from a flatbottomed, square base, or foundation, block 2 and having an upper end flange 3 in which is threaded radially of the member a set screw 4.
The base block 2, as distinguished from the support of my aforesaid patent, is equipped with stabilizing bars 5 pivoted, as at 6, at ends thereof to the sides of the block 2, respectively, adjacent the corners of the same to be swung thereon in one direction into the plane of the block and projected outwardly therefrom into oppositely extending relation on opposite sides of the block, or, for swinging in the opposite direction into substantially upright folded position alongside the socket member I. Studs 1 on said sides of the block I beneath which said bars 5 may be extended when projected hold said bars in projected position under the weight of the device.
A tubular post 8 having a head flange 9 is removably mounted in said socket member for vertical sliding and rotary adjustment into different set positions established by the set screw 4 extending radially through the flange 3 of said member.
A split ring II of tubular segmental sections I2 is provided on top of the head 9 in upright position with the split, or gap, I3 located preferably above the horizontal diametrical center of the ring and to one side of the Vertical diametrical center thereof. One of the sections I2 has a post Ill extending therefrom which is vertically slidable and rotatable in the post 8 for clamping thereto in different set positions by a set screw III in said post, and said sections are detachably secured together by axial studs I4 on one end of each section fitting into the end of an adjoining section and fixed therein by set screws I5 on said last sections. Each section I2 is braced by a reinforcing rod I6 extending between the end portions thereof. A plurality of equidistantly spaced spikes, or pins, I1 extend from the sections I2, respectively, so as to slant upwardly from one and the same side of the ring II constituting preferably the front side thereof.
In addition to the foregoing, the support of the instant invention includes a rest for a vase of flowers or the like. The rest comprises a tubular socket member l8, similar to socket member I, and connected to the latter by means of a pair of parallel links I9 pivoted at their opposite ends to said member I8 and to the member I, as at 20 and 2 I, respectively, so that the socket member I8 may be disposed upright on the floor, or, together with the links l9, swung upwardly alongside said member I parallel therewith into folded position. A rod-like post 22 is slidably fitted in said socket member I8 for vertical sliding adjustment into different set positions to be retained in such positions by a set screw 23 threaded into the upper end of the socket member I8. A rectangular panel 24 is secured in any desired manner to the upper end of the post 22.
The manner in which the described device is used for decorative purposes will be readily understood. Wreaths, or sprays, of flowers are hung on the spikes IT in covering relation to the ring II and rod I6 so as to form a circle of such flowers broken at the gap I3 of the ring. The ring II may be adjusted to different heights by means of the posts 8, I0, socket member I, and set screws 4, I0, or rotated into different positions as desired about the axis of the member I and without disturbing the described supporting structure. When it is desired to store the device, or transport the same, the sections I2 may be detached by loosening the set screws [5, the post 8 may be detached from the socket member I, the bars 5 folded alongside the said member I, in a manner already described, and the rest similarly folded alongside the member I, as also previously described, and all of the parts may be formed into a compact bundle as will be clear.
The panel 24 may be utilized to support a vase of flowers or any other decorative adjunct as desired.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufiice to ii part a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a support for building up a decorative floral display, a supporting base structure including an upright tubular socket member, a post vertically slidable and rotatable in said member into difierent set positions, a broken ring secured on top of said post in upright position with the gap therein arranged above the horizontal diametrical center of the ring, and spikes for hanging flowers on the ring extending laterally and upwardly from the same, said ring comprising segmental sections detachably secured together end to end.
2. In a support for building up a decorative floral display, a supporting base structure including an upright tubular socket member, a post vertically slidable and rotatable in said member into different set positions, a broken ring secured on top of said post in upright position with the gap therein arranged above the horizontal diametrical center of the ring, and spikes for hanging flowers on the ring extending laterally and upwardly from the same, a rest for supporting flowers at the base of the ring comprising a tubular socket member, and a pair of parallel links pivotally connecting the same to the first-mentioned socket member for swinging thereof into upright position on a floor, or folding alongside said second socket member parallel therewith.
3. In a support for building up a decorative floral display, a supporting base structure including an upright tubular socket member, a post vertically slidable and rotatable in said member into different set positions, a broken ring secured on top of said post in upright position with the gap therein arranged above the horizontal diametrical center of the ring, and spikes for hanging flowers on the ring extending laterally and upwardly from the same, said ring comprising segmental sections detachably secured together end to end, said sections including brace rods connecting the end portions together.
NEWELL G. I-IURLBUT.
