Description
J. s. MUNGER. Globe or Check Valve No. 223,749. Patented Jan. 20, 1880.
A um um WITNESSES lNVENTOR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEROME S. MUNGER, OF EDENBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO A. M. WILLIAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
GLOBE OR CHECK VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,749, dated January 20, 1880,
Application filed July 12, 1879. A
' To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JEROME S. MUNG R, of Edenburg, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Globe or Check Valves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings,
making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a vertical central section of my improved valve, and Fig. 2 is a representation of a modification thereof in detail. 1
This invention has relation to improvements in globe or check valves used in connection with steam pipes and boilers, water-pipes, and
the like.
The nature of the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A d'es 2 5 ignates the body of the valve-casing, having the ways or passages a a, formed by the partition b, and provided with an opening, 0,0011- nectin g said ways. The opening 0 has a raised annular flange, d, constituting the valve-seat,
and beveled at its outer upper edge, as shown in Fig. 1.
B indicates the ,wadjusting-screw, that engages the neck O, having corresponding threads, and connected to the body of the cas- 5 ing by a screw-thread. The screw B is rendered steam or water tight with reference to the neck by means of a packing in the nature of a stuffing-box, as shown, and its lower end is provided with a flange, e, that enters a re- 40 cess in the contiguous face of an'inverted cupvalve, 2), and is confined thereto by means of a screw-cap, e, engaging athread in the inner wall of said recess, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The cup-valve may be made in two sections,
'i '5, connected by a screw-thread attachment, but need not be necessarily so, as is shown in Fig. 2, where it is illustrated formed in one piece.
The cup of the valve is chamfered at its inner edge to correspond to the bevel of the seat, and has projecting from its bottom centrally a threaded tang, j, over which is passed apackingrin g, f, then awasher, f and, finally,
a nut, g, the latter being forcibly screwed on. This packing may be of cloth, soft rubber, 5 5 lead, copper, wood, or of any other desired material.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a slight modification, wherein a screw, j, is substituted for the tang, and isremovably applied to the valve, insteadof being fixed thereto. In all other respects it is precisely as above described.
I am aware that a valve having a central screw-stud, on which is placed a metallic disk provided with means to admit the passage of steam, is old; hence I make no claim to such devices.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the valve-stern B, provided witha flange, e, at its lower end, the inverted cup 1; and cap 0, the cup being provided with a tang, j, and screw-threaded externally at its lower edge, and the section i, secured to said screw-thread, and forming a recess in which the packing f is seated, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JEROME s. MUNGER.
