UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT S. ROBINSON, OF ALBANY, AND WILLIAM D. SUNDERLIN, OF GREEN ISLAND, NEW YORK.
BLlND-SLAT FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,653, dated January 20, 1880.
Application filed April 24, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT S. ROBINSON, of the city and county of Albany, and WIL- LIAM D. SUNDERLIN, of Green Island, county of Albany, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Fastening the Slats of Blinds, which improvements are fully described in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the device embodying the improvements in our invention; and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, illustrating its manner of operating with the slats of a blind.
Our invention consists of a pivoted finger button provided with a pendent or inwardlyprojecting holding-lip, a series of two or more notches made in the edge of the button, and a curved slot and holding-pin arranged in such a manner that the holdinglip and the notches will each be capable of engaging with a slat ofa series, so as to hold it firmly in the position it will be set to.
The object of our invention is to produce a device by which the slats of a blind will be looked, as maybe desired, either closed or half or full open.
In the drawings, A rep: esents a side of the frame of a blind, and a a a are slats, pivoted in the same in the manner practiced by the trade. B is a finger-button, made of either sheet or cast metal, with a form as shown, or any other that may be selected. Made in the lower end of the said button is the pivot-hole 0, through which a screw is passed and made to enter the wood of the frame, to serve as a pivot on which the button is to swing. Madein the upper end of the button is the oblong curved slot e. Made with the side of the button lying over the frame is a projecting finger-piece, b,
by whichthe button may be adjusted to any position selected. Made with the face-edge of the button, and turned down from the same, is the holding-lip d, having its lower edge made with a bevel corresponding with the line of bevel of the face of the slat when it is closed on its contiguous or adjoining slat. Made in the face-edge of the button, between the holding-lip d and the pivot end of the same, are
notches s and as, having their side edges made inclined in relation to the line of edge the notches are made in, so that when thebutton is moved outward from the frame over the slats to engage with a slat to be secured by either of the notches the sides of the notches will each correspond in their direction with the surface-lines of the slat held.
The manner in which our improved slatfastening device operates is as follows: The device is secured to the frame of the blind by the pivot-screw c and the binding guide-screw e, as shown, with the holding-lip d lying close against the inner side surface of the frame in which the slats a a a are pivoted. When it is desired to lock the slats closed, as shown by full lines, the slats are to be closed together flat and the button-piece is to be moved inward from over the frame to over the slats, as shown in Fig. 1, to the full limit of the curved slot 0 and holding-screw 0, when the slat will be locked to its adjacent or contiguous slat, and Will bind it, with all others in connection, in a fixed position, close locked together. When it is desired to lock the slat in a half-open position the button is to be made to engage with the slot by notch s, and when it is to be locked in a full-open position the slat is to be locked by the notch as, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
This device is simple and inexpensive, and can be readily applied to the blind by ordinary persons, and is not liable to get out of order or'to he deranged.
Having described our invention, What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The blind-slat fastening device composed of the pivoted fin ger-button provided with curved slot 0, holding-lip d, and notches s and .r, all combined and arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
