SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 223,586, dated January 13, 1880.

Application filed July 21, 1879 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS L. FAYAUX, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tightening Devices for Drums, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to constructa compact, convenient, and effective tightening device for drums, an object which I attain in the following manner, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a drum with my improved tightening device; Fig. 2, an enlarged view of a part ofthe same, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of one of the tighteners detached from the drum.

A is the body of the drum; B, the band which confines the batter-head, and D the band which confines the snare-head, these parts being constructed in the usual manner. There are also the usual hooks to, adapted to the bands B and D, and having eyes for the reception of the tightening-cord E.

At two or more equidistant points on the band B a hook, at, is replaced by a hook, I), the latter having a projecting lug, d, to an opening in which is adapted the upper port-ion of a stem, 0, the lower portion of which is threaded and adapted to threaded lugs f on a block, F, in which is formed an eye, g, for the reception of the tightening-cord E.

The upper end of the stem 0 is furnished with a thumb-piece, Gr, which bears on the lug d of the hook I), and by the manipulation of which the eye-block F may be raised or lowered, so as to tighten or slacken the cord E.

I am aware that drums have been heretofore constructed in which the eye-block F was provided with a threaded stem adapted to a nut bearing on the lug of a hook on one of the bands of the drum; but in this case the threaded stem was caused to project more and more beyond the band at each tightening operation, so that it soon became inconvenient, interfered with the proper manipulation of the drum-sticks, and had a tendency to out the head of an adjoining drum when a number were piled together, as is frequently done.

In my improved device the thumb-piece Gr always bears the same relation to the band B, no matter how tight or how slack the cord E may be, and there is no such projection of the thumb-piece above the band as would interfere with the proper manipulation of the drumsticks or tend to cut the head of another drum placed above it.

I claim as my in vention--- The combination of the drum-body A, the bands B D, the tightening-cord E, the eyeblock F, having a threaded lug or lugs,f, the hook I), having a lug d, and the threaded stem 0, adapted to the lug or lugs f, and having a thumb-piece, Gr, bearing on the lug d of the hook I), all substantially as set forth.
