Description

March 11, 1941. J, E, NELSON KNIFE Filed Jan. 3, 1940 Patented Mar. 11, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE i 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in knives and more particularly to that type of knife having a removable blade, and has for its primary object to provide a knife 5 .of the aforementioned character wherein 01d safety razor blades may be used as the blade portion.
Other objects of the invention are toprovide a knife which will be simple in construction, strong, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
Still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, Wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure l is a top plan view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of my invention with parts broken away and shown in section.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
25 Figure 5 is a bottom plan View of the blade holding member.
Referring now to the drawing, in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral Ill designates a metal shank having iiat surfaces II and I2 at its top and bottom sides and a reduced threaded end portion I3. The end opposite the threaded portion I3 is flanged to form -a head I4 which is slotted as at I5. A guard I6 is secured at one end portion in the slot I5 of the head I4 and is adapted to receive the blade Il. The blade Il has a projection I8 which extends through an opening I9 in the shank I0 rearwardly of the head I4.
A sleeve 20 slidably engages over the shank IIl and has a fiat surface 2I on the inside thereof at one end thereof for contacting the iiat (Cl. SII-337) side I2 of the shankv I0. The sleeve 20 is further slotted as at 22 for engagement over the end of the blade I1 which is mounted in the slot I5 of the shank I0. A nut 23 is engaged on the threaded portion I3 to releasably hold the sleeve 2B on the shank I0.
The guard I6 is channel shaped in cross section and has its outer end curved as at 23 while its other end is soldered or otherwise secured to the shank I0 in the slot I5. When the device is assembled the blade Il is mounted in the guard I6 with the end of the blade having the pro-jection I8 inserted in the slot I5. In this position the sleeve 20 is placed over the shank Ill with the slot 22 in the sleeve fitted over the projectionl I8 and holding the projection I8 against the head I4 of the shank I0. 'Ihe nut 23 holds the sleeve 20 in position which in turn holds the blade I1 in the guard I6.
The blade I1 is obtained by breaking a double edged safety razor blade into two parts.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in the materials and in the structure and arrangement of the parts, within the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
In a device of the character described, a knife including a iiange headed threaded shank having a vertical slot therein, a guard mounted in said slot and extending from said head, a blade having a vertical projection thereon mounted in said guard with the projection in said slot, a sleeve mounted on said threaded shank for holding said blade in said guard, and a nut on said threaded shank for releasably holding said sleeve in engagement with said blade.
. JOHN E. NELSON.
