, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,368, dated January 6, 1880.

Application filed November 8, 1879.

To all whom it may concern crossed near their upper ends.

Be it known that I, JOHN F. MARIS, of Oisne, in the county of Wayne and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

The figure of the drawing is a representation of a perspective of my fence.

This invention relates to an improvementin the construction of fences, as hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

7 Referring by letter to the accompanying drawing, A designates one of the inclined posts, to which is bolted or rigidly secured, in any suitable manner, the two bars B O, and D represents the remaining post, to which these bars B O are pivoted by a bolt, E, at a point about intermediate of its ends.

As herein shown, the said two posts and bars constitute the end of each section of the fence and serve to support and maintain the rails in position as follows: The two posts are inclined toward each other and the post D turned upon its pivot until the posts are One end of a rail of one section will then be placed in the space between the upper ends of the posts, and an end of a rail from another section will also be placed between the said ends, as shown. The ends of two similar rails will be placed upon the crossbar O and within the space f, while the ends of the two lower rails will be placed within the space 9, so as to rest between the inclined bracebar B and the post A. The weight of the upper rails tends to turn the .post D upon its pivot, so that the ends of the posts will separate at the top similarly to a pair of shears, and by such means the second line of rails will be firmly griped between the posts and the cross-bar.

Owing to the inclination given to the bracebar B, the lower rail will be readily wedged between it and the post A, so that this bracebar, in addition to its function of a brace, also serves to maintain the lower rail in position, and hence materially aid the upper rail, which is held as set forth, in preventing the fence from sagging endwise. This brace-bar B is firmly bolted to the post Anear the lower end of the same, and is connected to the pivoted post D by the pivot-bolt E, so that the said post may be free to turn upon its pivotal bearing, and at the same time connected with the lower part of the post A by a diagonal brace.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a fence, the post A, with the cross-bar B and the brace-bar O rigidly secured thereto, and the post D, pivoted to the said bars 13 and 0, spaces being left between the said parts for the rails, and the post D being adapted to turn upon its pivot by the weight of the upper rails so as to bind the ends of the next lower line of rails, substantially as set forth.

2. -In-a fence, the post- A, pivoted by a crossbar to the post D, and having an inclined brace-bar, B, rigidly secured thereto, the said inclined brace-bar being extended from a point near the lower end of post A up to the point upon post 1) where the crossbar is pivoted, and being at such point connected to post D by a pivot-bolt, the bar 0 and post A, together with brace B, constituting an angular inclos ing-frame for the lower rails, substantially as set forth.
