Patented Feb. 25, 1941 PATENT OFFICE BOOKMARKER Roger S. Manzardo, Berne, Switzerland, assignor to Hans Felix Stoffel, Rorschach, Switzerland Application May 24, 1937, Serial No. 144,504
. In Germany May 30, 1936 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in bookmarkers of the class comprising an elastic band anchored to one corner of the cover and. extending diagonally across the latter; and. the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide facilities for easily and quickly mounting the marker to any book cover; and, second, to afford means for readily adjusting the said band to the proper tension in adaptation to the changing thickness of one and the same stack of pages.
I attain these and related objects by the bookmarker illustrated, by way of one example, in the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of the marker fixedly attached to the upper right-hand and inside corner of the reverse cover of a book; and
Fig. 2, a cross-section on the line II--II of Fig. 1.
I denotes a triangular piece of relatively thick and tough paper or cardboard diagonally folded in Z-shape. In this fold, denoted by 2, an endless rubber band 3 is passed. A small plate in the form of a shield 4 is loosely clamped to the said band 3. The piece I is gummed on the 2 rear side, and thus is easily pasted onto the inside of the finished book cover or to one of the pages.
When mounted as aforesaid, the rubber band 3 is passed diagonally over and across the cor- 30 responding corner of the stack of pages, and this operation is facilitated by the provision of the small shield 4. The primary function of the latter, however, is that of subjecting the band 3 to the proper tension in adaptation to the changing thickness of the stack of pages which it holds down. By turning the shield 4 about the band 3, the latter is twisted and any slack is taken up so that the stack of pages is'always held down 5 by the correct amount of pressure. The fold 2 also may have the form of an inverted U through which the rubber band 3 is passed.
By slipping the band 3 over the entire stack of pages of a book, the said band is subject to a 10 certain maximum tension which decreases as the pages are turned over in any appreciable number. In order, then, to again apply the necessary grip upon one corner of the stack of pages, the band 3 is again tensioned as required 15 by means of the shield 4, and this operation is done easily and quickly by the reader. When the latter has finished reading, the band 3 indicates the page on which he subsequently will have to continue with his reading. 20
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A bookmarker of the character described comprising a triangular base element gummed on one side, a diagonally extending fold of Z-shape in the said element, and the combination of an endless rubber band embedded in the said fold with means secured thereto for the purpose of increasing the tension of the said band in adaptation to the decreasing number of pages to be held down.
