SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,276, dated January 6, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, THOMAS J. OARRICK, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, haveinvented a new and useful improvement in Head-Rests,ot' which the following is a specification.

My invention relates .to certain improvements in head-rests particularly adapted for the use of dentists.

One part of the invention is applicable for either a portable head-rest or for permanent attachment to a dental chair, while another part is designed exclusively as part of a headrest for attachment to an ordinary chair or seat I 5 back, thus providing a portable article suitable for country practitioners.

My invention will first be described in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, and then designated in the claims.

Figure l is a side view, showing the headrest attached to a portable standard. Fig. 2 is a rear View, in which the head-rest proper is removed from its shank. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the hook. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the lower standard broken. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of standard. Fig. 6 is the clamp for the head-rest.

The letter A represents the hook to fit over the back of an ordinary chair. The body of 0 this hook is provided with a vertical eye, I), (see Fig. 3,) and upon one side is a set-screw, c, which enters the eye. The standard 13, the upper end of which supports the head-rest, passes through the vertical eye, from which it 3 5 will be seen the hook may be adjusted on the standard to suit the height of chair-back or the patients head, and rigidly set by means of the set-screw c, or equivalent device, which comes in contact with the shallow notches a, formed 40 on the rear side of the standard, which prevent the set-screw from slipping on one side of the standard B, the entire straight portion of which is grooved, as seen at d.

An extension part, E, of standard is of suitable size and shape to fit the groove on the part B, and its lower end is curved, as seen at E, to extend under the chair-seat, and is provided with a setscrew, f. One edge of the extension is provided with notches h. A set screw, t, the end of which screwsinto an ofi'set on the rear edge of standard B, is provided, next to the threaded part, with a beveled enlargement, Ir, similar to the under side of the head of an ordinary wood-screw, and above the enlargement has the thumb-piece by which the screw is turned. The location of this screw alongside ot' the groove in standard Bis such as to permit the extension part E to slide freely when the beveled enlargement is withdrawn; but when the screw is turned so as to bring the beveled enlargement into coincidence or engagement with one of the notches h, then the extension part E is rigidly connected with the part B.

From this description it will be seen the standard and its extension, provided with setscrewf and the adjustable hook A, constitute the parts by which the head-rest is attached to a chair. l

The head-rest is attached to and is adjusta- 7o ble on the curved part B at the upper end of the standard.

The letter F represents the head-rest proper, having secured at its back ametal socket, 1, into which the adjusting rod or head-rest shank m is secured by a pin, a, or other suitable means. The head-rest shank may be of any length to give the desired range of adjustment, and is held by means of a suitable clamp, H, consisting of an eye or griper, through which the rod or shank passes, and means to cause the eye to tighten on the rod, so as to permit its adjustment in the clamp at any part of its length. In the present instance the elamp has an eye, 9, slit or open on one side, (see Fig. 6,) with the part 12 on each side of the slit extended and terminating in a semicircular base, 1), the two bases forming a section of a cone, which, when compressed together, cause the eye to gripe or tighten on the go rod m. To eit'ect this a plate, q, is provided at each end with a screw-threaded hole, and has in the center a tapering hole in size and shape to correspond with the cone shape of the semicircular bases of the clamping-eye over which 5 the plate fits, and by drawing down on which the extended parts of the eye are compressed, thus tightening the eye on the rod.

To provide clamping means by which to id just the clamp that holds the head-rest up or I00 down on the standard, a second plate, 9*, also has at each end a hole, and is of aform to fit over the broad side of the standard B and encompass both edges thereof, by which means it may readily slide on the curved part of the standard. A screw, 8, connects the two plates at one end, and a thumb'set-screw, L, serves to secure the clamp H, which holds the headrest at any location on the standard, and at the same time to tighten the eye on the. headrest shank.

By this construction I have a compound clamp, answering all the requirements of adjusting a headrest, either for portable use, as in the present instance, or"'t'or permanent attachment to a dental chair.

I do not herein claim, broadly, the clamp having the eye slit or open on one side, and with the parts each side of the slit extended and terminating in semicircular bases forming a section of a cone, as such will constitute the subject of another application for a patent.

Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1. The combination, substantially as set forth, of a standard consisting of an upper part, B, grooved lengthwise, an extension part, E, having its lower end curved to extend under a chair-seat and its upper end adapted to slide in the groove and a hook adapted to fit over a chair-back and secured on the standard.

2. In a portable head-rest, the combination, substantially as set forth, of the two-part standard B E, extensible, substantially as described, the lower part curved to extend under the chair-seat and provided with a set-screw,

and a hook having avertical eye through which the two parts of standard may pass, and provided with means, substantially as described, to secure it at any point of adjustment on the standard.

3. An extensible standard having its upper part grooved lengthwise and provided alongside of the groove with a set-screw having a beveled enlargement, k, and the lower part adapted to slide in the groove, and having notches h formed on one edge, substantially as set forth.

4. A head-rest standard adapted to be attached to an ordinary chair, and having its upper end curved, in combination with aheadrest adapted to be attached to and adjusted over the curve of the upper curved end by means substantially as set forth.

5. The combination, substantially as set forth, of a head-rest standard curved at its upper end and a head-rest adapted to be attached to and adjusted on the curved end by means substantially as set forth.

' 6. The combination, substantially as set forth, of a headreststandard having its upper end curved, a compoumd clamp consisting of an eye or griper through which the head-rest shank passes, a plate, q, to cause the eye to tighten on the shank, a plate, 1, adapted to slide on the curved partof standard and connected at one end to the plate first mentioned. and the whole operated by a single set-screw, L.
