FOLDING BOX Filed Aug. 1'7, 1939 IIUT usen BLADES HERE I I I I I 1 15 I INVENTOR .Zdwz7a .17.], 0079a f ATTO R N EYS Patented Feb. 11, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FOLDING BOX Application August 17, 1939,-Serial No. 290543 3 Claims.
This invention relates to folding boxes and has for an object'to provide a box structure including a bodyxand a sliding cover, the body being foldable to provide a closed compartment "and an open compartment.
Another object of the invention is to provide a folding box having a rectangular body with a standard folding end and with a specially constructed folded end arranged to provide an open compartment with the walls automatically locked as-soon as'the parts have been folded.
Anadditional and more specific object of the invention is to provide a folding box wherein the upper and lower panels are provided With exten- 'sions adapted to be folded and interlocked to provide with the side of the box a rectangular open compartment.
In the accompanying drawing- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a folding box disclosing an embodiment of the invention, part of the body being shown as pulled out of the cover;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the body of the box shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through Fig. 2 on the line 3-3;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through Fig. 2 on the line 4--4; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the body shown in Fig. 2 with the ends unfolded and spread out more or less.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, indicates a rectangular slide which 35 may be made .of pasteboa-rd or other suitable sheet material and 2 the body of the box also formed of pasteboard or other suitable material and constructed in one piece. The body 2 is formed from a single blank folded to present a rectangular center portion having a top panel 3, a bottom panel 4, and side panels 5 and 6. A slot 1 is arranged at the juncture of the top panel 3 and the side panel 5, whereby articles may be discharged into the closed compartment 8. As
5 shown in Fig. 4, the open compartment 9 is arranged at one end of the compartment 8.
It will be understood that the box may be used in connection with any desired article, but it has been designed especially for safety razor blades.
50 Usually a package of unused razor blades is deposited in the compartment 9 and when a blade is used it is discharged through slot 1 into the compartment 8 where it remains until some convenient time when the owner of the box may 58 open up the end I0 of the compartment. The
endlfl is a conventional folding end for folding boxes and consists of tabs and I2 which are extensions of side'panels 5 and B and an extension |3' having a section I4 and a tuck-in tab l5. When this end is to be closed, the tabs and I2 are swung toward each other and then the panel I4 is swung against the folded device. After this has been done, the tuck-in tab I5 is arranged as shown in Fig.4 and'the end is closed. The end l6 which is opposite toend lfl'is of a very special construction and forms part of the open compartment 9.
As illustrated particularly in Fig. 5, panel 5 is provided with an extension I! while the panel 4 is'provided with an extension IS. The extension I! is'formedwithsections l9 and 20'and a tab 2| while the extension 18 is formed with sections 22"and' 23 and a tab 24; The section 22 isprovid'ed'with a pull tab 25 which maybe positioned as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4 or may be allowed to stand upright. This tab is used for sliding the body 2 in and out of the slide cover I.
After the parts have been constructed as shown in Fig. 5 and it is desired to fold the body, the section I9 is swung downwardly to form one end wall of compartment 8, as shown in Fig. 4, and section 20 is arranged parallel to and contacting with the bottom panel 4, after which the tab 2| is arranged parallel to the wall or section l9 and tabs 26 and 2! folded so as to extend toward each other. The section 22 of extension I8 is swung to extend at right angles to the bottom panel 4 and then section 23 is swung downwardly over the tabs 2|, 26 and 21. The tab 24 is then moved to a position parallel to the bottom panel 4 and the folding operation is completed. By folding the parts in this way they interlock and remain in this position until positively 1 moved therefrom.v After the extension IT has been folded, the tabs 26 and 21 are folded against the tab 2| and then extension I8 is folded as just described so that the ends will be very strong and the parts fully interlocked while providing an easily engaged pull tab 25 whereby the body 2 may be readily slid into and out of the slide cover I.
I claim:
1. A box blank adapted to form a rectangular closure having a closed compartment and a compartment having one open side, said blank including a rectangular body, a pair of rectangular side panels extending laterally from opposite sides of said body, each of said side panels having a tab at each end, said body having at one end a closure section provided with a locking tab and at the opposite end an extension having a pair of folding sections and a tab, each of said folding sections being of equal width and equal to the height of said side panel, a rectangular top panel extending laterally from the side edge of one of said side panels, said top panel extending from one end of the last-mentioned side panel but falling short of the other end, an extension from said top panel parallel and in contact with the lastmentioned side panel, said last-mentioned extension having a pair of sections of equal width equal to the height of the side panels, and a securing tab extending from the edge of said top panel opposite the edge merging into the last-mentioned side panel.
2. A folding box including a body having a rectangular tubular portion provided with top, bottom and side panels, one end of said body having a pair of tabs extending fromv said side panels and an end section extending from said bottom, said end section being provided with an end closure sectionhaving a locking tab, the tabs of said side panels being folded toward each other and the end section being folded over said folded tabs While said locking tab extends over said tabs into the tubular portion for holding the parts in their folded position, said side panels at the opposite end having a pair of tabs adapted to be folded toward each other when the box is closed, said top and bottom panels at said opposite end being provided with extensions, each of said extensions having a pair of folding sections and a tab at the end, the extension from the top panel having one section formed of the top panel, said extension being of a width equal to the height of the side walls, a second section equal in width to the distance between the end of the top panel and the end of the side panels, the first section being folded at a right angle to the top panel to form a divisional wall while the second section is positioned flatwise against said bottom with the tab on the end thereof folded upwardly against the inwardly extending tabs of the side panels, the extension of the bottom portion of the bottom panel having two sections each equal to the height of the side panels and a tab equal to the distance between the end of the top panel and the end of the side panels, said bottom extension being folded over and straddling the tabs of the side panels and the tab of the top panel while the tab of the bottom extension fits flatwise between the side walls against the section of the extension from the top panel.
'3. A box of the character described including a body having top, bottom and side panels, said side panels at one end having tabs adapted to be folded toward each other and said bottom panel having an extension projecting from the end of the body and formed with three sections of equal width, each equal to the height of the side walls, said top panel being formed with a pair of sections and a tab at the end of equal width, each of said sections being of a width equal to the height of the side panels and one of said sections being part of the top panel foldable to extend at right angles to the top panel to form a wall offset from the end of the box, while the other section and the tab connected thereto are foldable to form with the bottom section and said side panels an open compartment, the extension on the bottom panel being foldable over the tabs extending from the said panel and over the tab of the extension from the top panel to hold the parts in their folded position, while the third section of the bottom panel is folded flatwise against the bottom of said compartment for locking the parts against unfolding.
