SNYDER PACKAGE FOR MERCHANDISE Filed Aug. 3, 1939 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. Maa jorz'e Snyder Patented F eb. 11, 1941 UNITED era PATENT OFFEQE PACKAGE FOR MERCHANDISE Application August 3, 1939, Serial No. 288,068
1 Claim.
This invention relates to an improved package for merchandise which permits the articles to be contained therein to be neatly and compactly packaged for shipment or for sale and without danger of said articles becoming mussed, disarranged or soiled during the handling of the package, and which also permits the articles of merchandise to be presented for sale in an exceedingly attractive manner and so that the customer may readily see the character of the goods before purchasing the same.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a package for merchandise which can be simply and cheaply manufactured from a single sheet of transparent bendable material.
Another object of the invention is to provide a merchandise package which will permit the packaging of a plurality of articles, such for instance as several pairs of folded ladies stockings, in a neat and flat state, and in such a manner that said articles will be securely held within the package and will not become disarranged or injured while the package is being handled or displayed for sale.
A further object of the invention is to provide a package for merchandise which will display the character of the merchandise contained therein when said merchandise is being offered for sale.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawings and will be pointed out in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of the improved merchandise package showing a plurality of folded stockings contained therein;
Figure 2 is an end view of the package shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the blank of transparent material from which the package is formed;
Figure 4 is an end view of the package with the stockings positioned therein and showing the package as it appears just prior to the securing of said stockings within the package; and
Figure 5 is a front edge view of the package showing the stockings secured therein and just prior to the securing of the covers of the package together.
The merchandise package of my invention is formed from a rectangular sheet of any suitable bendable transparent material such as "Cellophane or celluloid, or the like, as indicated at l in Figure 2. The sheet of material is provided with the rounded corners 2, the purpos of which Will be explained later on herein. The sheet of material is scored along the lines 3 and 4 so that it can be folded along said lines and provide a book-like cover having the closed end 7 portion 5 and the side members 6 and l. The 5 side member 1, which is the top of the package,
is provided with the openings 8 and 9 therethrough, which openings are positioned adjacent the outer edge of said side member. The side member 6, which is the bottom of the package, 10 is provided with openings l0 and I I therethrough, the opening l0 being positioned adjacent the outer edge of the side member 6 and the opening H being positioned adjacent the fold line 4. The blank when it is in its folded l5 condition is clearly shown in Figures 1, 2, 4 and 5.
The articles of merchandise to be contained within the package are placed therein in such manner that they will lie between the side members 6 and 1 and so that they will be positioned between the openings l0 and II in the side member 6.
The articles of merchandise are retained in place within the package and between the side members 6 and 1 by means of a string or ribbon indicated at l2. The ribbon I 2 has one end thereof inserted from the outside of the side member 6, through the opening I0. The other end of the ribbon is inserted through the opening II as clearly shown in Figure 4. The said ribbon is then passed over the top of the articles of merchandise to be contained in the package and said merchandise is then secured to side member 6 by tying the ribbon together in a suitable knot as at I3 in Figure 5. The ends of the ribbon which are left after said knot l3 has been tied are then passed through the openings 8 and 9 of the side member I and the side members 1 and 6 are secured together by tying the I ends of the ribbon into a bow knot M such as indicated in Figures 1 and 2, or into any other form of a suitable knot.
It will thus be seen that the merchandise, such as several pairs of stockings as indicated in the drawings, will be securely maintained in a fiat state within the transparent package of my invention, and due to the transparent-character of the material of the package said goods can be plainly seen and can be examined with- 5 out handling the same. Also, it is apparent that because of the manner in which the goods are packed and retained in the package the said package may be mailed or shipped to the customer in a fiat state and the merchandise will be maintained therein without being mussed up or disarranged. Furthermore, the transparent package enables the merchandise to be displayed on the counters at retail stores in an attractive manner and the customers can examine the merchandise in the package without danger of injury to the said merchandise.
The transparent merchandise package of my invention may be made more attractive in appearance, if desired, by decorating the surface thereof with appropriate designs such for instance as have been indicated at I5, l6 and IT in Figure 1.
As pointed out above, it is preferable to have the corners of the side members 6 and I provided with the rounded edge 2 because when the package is used for packaging articles made of delicately formed fiabrics, such for instance as sheer knitted hosiery, said corners, if they were sharpangled, might catch into the fabric of the articles when they were being removed from or being placed into the package and thus cause injury to the same. By rounding ofi the corners of the package the danger of causing injury to the merchandise in this manner is eliminated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A package for merchandise, comprising a book-like wrapper made of transparent material and formed with a merchandise supporting portion, a, closed end portion, and a cover portion, said merchandise supporting portion having an opening therethrough adjacent the free edge thereof and a second opening therethrough adjacent the point where it is joined to the closed end portion, said cover portion having a pair of openings therethrough positioned adjacent to its free edge, and a ribbon securing means having its ends inserted through the openings in said merchandise supporting portion and having one of said ends extending across the length of the interior face of said merchandise supporting portion and adapted to be joined to the other end at the free end of said merchandise supporting portion to secure merchandise within the package, and said ribbon securing means also being adapted to have its ends inserted through the openings formed through the cover portion and tied together to secure said cover portion to the merchandise supporting portion.
