3 Claims.
This invention appertains to locks and latches, and more particularly to a novel adjustable strike plate for door latches to eliminate play between the latch bolt and the strike plate, and thereby prevent the annoying rattling of a door.
My present invention is an improvement over my prior Patent No. 1,793,115, issued to me February 17, 1931. In my prior patent, I `provided. a movable plate on the body portion of the strike plate, with means for adjusting the movable plate from the outer edge of the strike plate. VIn this construction, a particular type of strike plate had to be made, and the door jamb had to be mortised or cut in a particular manner to receive the strike plate.
One of the primary objects of my invention is the provision of means whereby the strike plate will be of a simple form, and whereby the same can be readily and easily fitted in a door jamb. A further object of my invention is the provision of means for adjusting the movable plate from the outer face of the strike plate, so that the strike plate can be easily set to the desired position without undue effort on the part of the operator.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed,
and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
which drawing:
Figure l is an enlarged, horizontal, sectional view showing my improved strike plate applied to a door frame, with the door latch in engagement with the strike plate.
Figure 2 is an enlarged, fragmentary, detail, vertical, sectional view through a part of the strike plate, showing the novel means employed for` adjusting the movable plate, the view being taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 4.
Figure 3 is a vertical, sectional view through the strike plate, taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 4, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a rear, elevational view of the improved strike plate.
Figure 5 is a View similar to Figure 4, but showing the slide plate removed from the movable plate and the operating shaft in cross section. 50 Figure 6 is a fragmentary, rear, elevational View showing a slightly modified form of means for adjusting the movable plate.
Figure 7 is a detail, sectional view similar to Figure 2, but showing the operating cam pro- 55 vided with a liange for holding the movable plate and the slide plate in position against displacement.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter F generally indicates the frame of a door having attached thereto my novel strike plate S for receiving the latch bolt I0 of the door latch L. The jamb of the door can be mortised or cut away, as at II, and the strike plate 10 S is fitted thereover and secured in place by suitable fastening elements, such as screws, which pass through openings I2 formed in the strike plate. l
The strike plate S takes the form of strike plates now in general use, and, hence, the same includes a flat body portion I4, having an opening I5 therein for the reception of the latch bolt Ill..A The strike plate can also be provided with an opening (not shown) for the lock bolt. 20
As set forth in detail in my prior patent, when there is play between the latch bolt and the walls of the opening I5, an annoying rattle often takes place between the door and its frame. To eliminate this annoying rattle and to take up the 25 play, a movable plate I6 is provided, and this plate is adjusted into and out of the opening I5.
In accordance with my present invention, the inner face of the body portion I4 of the strike plate S is recessed, as at Il, to form a guideway 30 for the movable plate. Slidably mounted for vertical movement on the movable plate I6 is a slide plate I8. The vertical edges of the movable plate can be provided with ribs I9 to dene the guideway or track for the slide plate I8. 35 This slide plate has formed therein an opening for the reception of a cam or wheel 20, which is snugly tted therein. This can or wheel is fitted on a rotatable shaft 2|, which extends through a slot 22 formed in the movable plate. 40 The shaft is, in turn, rotatably mounted in an opening 23 in the strike plate, and the outer end of the shaft can be provided with a slotted head 24 similar to the head of a screw, whereby the shaft can be turned by a screw-driver. The cam is rigidly secured to the shaft in any desired way. In the present instance, however, a stud 25 extends through the cam 2U and is threaded into the inner end of the shaft 2|.
In order to hold the movable plate and the slide plate in position against displacement, the outer edge of the cam can be tapered, as at 26, and the tapered portion of the cam engages a similar taper on the wall of the opening formed in the slide plate for the cam. If preferred, the
peripheral edge of the cam can have formed thereon a flange 21 for engaging over the outer face of the slide plate, as is clearly shown in Figure 7 of the drawing.
In use of my invention, it is merely necessary to turn the shaft El and rotate the cam 20 for imparting movement to the plate I-6 transversely of the strike plate. Thus, the movable plate can be set in the desired relation to the opposite wall of the opening l5. Hence, the strike plate can be adjusted to the size of the latch bolt of the door latch, which will eliminate play between the door latch and strike plate.
During the turning of the cam 2B, the slide plate will move up and down on the movable plate I6 in accordance with the rotation of the cam 20. f
Other means may be provided for adjusting the movable plate, and in Figure 6 I have shown a movable plate 30 mounted in a guideway 3| on the body portion of a strike plate 32. In this form, the movable plate 30 has formed therein a longitudinally extending slot 33, one wall of which has formed thereon a rack bar 34. A rotatable shaft is carried by the strike plate, and this shaft has formed thereon or secured thereto a small pinion 36 for engaging the teeth of the rack bar. By this arrangement, when the shaft 35 is turned, the movable plate will be moved in and out by the engagement of the pinion with the rack bar.
Various changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of my invention, but what I claim as new is:
1. A strike plate for door latches comprising, a body having an opening therein for the latch bolt, and a recess in its inner face communicating with said opening, a movable plate slidably mounted in the recess and adjustable into and out oi the opening, a slide plate on the movable plate for movement therewith and slidably mounted thereon for movement relative thereto at right angles to the movement of the movable plate, a rotatable shaft carried by the strike plate, a cam wheel rotatable with the shaft, and said slide plate having an opening therein for snugly receiving the cam wheel.
2. A strike plate for door latches comprising, a body having an opening therein for the latch bolt, and a recess in its inner face communieating with said opening, a movable plate slidably mounted in the recess and adjustable into and out of the opening, a slide plate on the movable plate for movement therewith and slidably mounted thereon for movement relative thereto at right angles to the movement of the movable plate, a rotatabe shaft carried by the strike plate, a cam wheel rotatable with the shaft, and said slide plate having an opening therein for snugly receiving the cam wheel, the peripheral edge of the cam and the wall of the opening being provided with a corresponding taper.
3. A strike plate for door latches comprising, a body having an opening therein for the latch bolt, and a recess in its inner face communieating with said opening, a movable plate slidably mounted in the recess and adjustable into and out of the opening, a slide plate on the movable plate for movement therewith and slidably mounted thereon for movement relative thereto at right ,angles to the movement of the movable plate, a rotable shaft carried by the strike plate, a cam wheel rotatable with the shaft, said slide plate having an opening therein for snugly receiving the cam wheel, and a peripheral flange formed on the cam engaging the outer face of the slide plate.
