IMPROVEMENT IN PEDALS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,061, dated December 30, 1879; application filed July 28, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE V. NEILL, of Boston, in the county of Sutt'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pedals for Piano-Fortes or Organs; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is top "iew of a pair of pedals of my improved kind as applied to the lower part of the case of an upright pianoforte. Fig. 2 is a section taken longitudinally and vertically through one of such pedals, and also through the part of the case in which it is placed. In such drawings, A denotes part of the bottom, and B partot' the front, of the pianocase. while 0 C are the pedals as applied thereto.

Fig. 3 is a top view, and Fig. 4 a vertical section, of the ordinary kind ot'pedal, such figures showing its arrangement relatively to the pianocase, by which it will be seen that the pedal is practically straight, or, in other words, that the part which extends out of the case, and on which the foot of a' 'ierformer is to be placed in order to move the pedal downward, is substantially on a level with, it not higher than, the part within the case. The objection to this latter kind of pedal is, that when in use the part of it without the case is too high or at an inconvenient position to be reached by the foot of the player, and that in placing the foot thereon and pressing down the pedal the toe of the shoe generally brings up or bears against the front of the case, and in so doing, and while the pedal is moved, is very liable to mar or deface the case.

In carrying out my improvement I make the part of the pedal that is without the case to extend downward at a right or an obtuse angle to the part within the case, and next bend it in alike manner outward, all being as represented in Figs. 1 and 2. The part a, on which the foot rests, thus, as shown, becomes connected with the part c, which extends into the case, by a part, b, which is at an obtuse angle to each of such parts a and 0, such part Z) serving not only to depress the part a to a position for it to be conveniently reached by the foot of a player while resting at its heel on the door, but as a stop or guard to prevent the foot from being forced against the piano or organ case and doing injury thereto.

My pedal differs from that shown in Patent No. 169,931 for in the latter the foot-rest is practically on a level with the lower part from which such rest extends, whereas in my pedal the foot-rest is below the level of its lever, and is joined to such lever by a connection which is at, or about at, a right angle to each, all being in one piece of metal.

So my pedal differs from that shown in Patent No. 86,621, in which the t'ootrest stands at an obtuse angle only to the lever, whereas in my pedal there are necessarily two bends or obtuse angles between the foot-rest and its lever.

So my pedal differs from either the p dal B or the foot-rest A shown in Patent No. 197,370, as the latter has no lever or part to turn on a pivot or fulcrum; but each is provided with a mortise-d head to receive and slide on an upright bar, whereby the foot-rest is always in a horizontal position.

\Vhat I claim as my invention is as follows, viz:

1. The improved piano or organ pedal having its foot-rest a and lever 0 arranged with each other as shown, and in one piece, with their intervening connection, I). disposed at about a right angle to each of them, all being as set forth.

2. In combination with the piano or organ case, and the pedal-arm to extend within such, as shown, the outer 1.)edal-arm, bent downward at an obtuse angle, or thereabout, toi he inner lever, c, and thence horizontally, or thereabout, all being substantially as shown.
