Patented Jan. 28, 1941 UNITED STATES HAIR CURLER Albert J. iiyraud and Argentino De Julio, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application March 8, 1938, Serial No. 194,702
7 Claims. (Cl. 132-33) This invention relates to improvements in hair curlers and has particular reference to a hair curler of various contours to produce various curling effects.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which may be expanded or contracted to accommodate various widths of curls.
A further object is to produce a device which is simple in construction, and therefore,- economical to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals iii areemployed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of our device in extended position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of our device in retreated position;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation, looking from the left of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an end elevation, looking from the right of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a similar view to Fig. 1 of a modified form of our invention;
Fig. 6 is a view of a further modified form; and
Fig. 7 is a right end view of our device of Fig. 6..
In the curling of hair, it has been customary to employ curling sticks which have a smooth, rounded surface. These sticks do not grip the hair in any manner, and therefore, the hair slides thereover.
Applicants have, therefore, devised a curler 85 having a many-sided structure which more or less kinks the hair and causes a much better gripping action, with the result that when the curler is rotated, the hair will not slip, as it does on the round type of curler. Applicants curler may be adjusted longitudinally to accommodate various lengths.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of our invention, the numeral 5 designates a tubular portion having flat faces, as shown at A which meet with sharp edges B. Within this tubular member is slidably held a plurality of similar tubular sections 6, 1, 8, 9, and II, and tubular sections l2, l3, i4, l6, l1 and i8,
each group sliding into the tubular member from the opposite ends. These tubular sections 6 to II and I2 to l8 telescope, as best illustrated in Fig. 2, and each has a groove is formed adjacent the end thereof, which enables the fingers to grasp the member and withdraw the same from its telesires.
scoped position. Each section has at its inner end a groove similar to groove i8 which engages an internal bead formed by groove is by which the sections are held against collapse when in extended position. From this construction it will 5 be apparent that the hair may be wound upon the curler, that the edges B between the flat faces A will assist in gripping the hair during the winding operation, making tight curls, and that the same may be expanded or contracted as the user de- 1 The tubular sections have sides varying in number from 3 to l2 sothat the device is adapted for making curls with hair having a considerable variation in texture.
In the form Fig. 5 the tubular portion 5a has a i comb 5b formed integrally with or secured to the same. Sections 6, I, 8, 9, ll, l2, l3, i4, l6, l1 and I8 being similar to those of Fig. 1 except for the grooves |9a which are very short, thus facilitating a removal of the curl from the curler after 20 formation.
In Figs. 6 and 7 we show a further modified form of our invention in which the central portion 20 comprises a comb having a curler 2| provided with fiat sides 22 having sharp edges 23 and 25 a tapered end portion 24, the size and taper of which maybe varied considerably, if desired. A polygonal curler 25 is formed at the opposite end of comb 20 and also at flat faces 26 and sharp edges 21 and is further provided with a bore 28 30 extending a substantial distance into the same from the end thereof and adapted to receive a portion of a hair clip commonly used in making curls. The curler portions 2| and 25 may beformed integrally with the comb 20 or detachable 85 therefrom and secured to each other, in which case plug and socket connections 29 may be employed.
The curler of our invention may, if desired, be constructed without the flat faces A but with the 40 sharp edges B, it being understood that the sharp edges 13 are important elements of the invention whereby the hair is gripped by these edges.
It is to be understood that the form of our invention herewith shown and described is to be 45 taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described our invention, we claim:
1. A hair curler as described comprising a comb portion and an elongated curler portion having fiat faces and sharp edges therebetween. 5
2. A hair curler as described comprising a comb portion and a plurality of elongated curler portions, detachably secured thereto.
3. A hair curler as described having a pair of elongated members, each having flat faces and sharp edges therebetween, one of said members having a tapered end portion, the other of said members having securing means for a hair clip.
' 4. A haireurler as described having a pair of elongated members, each having flat faces and sharp edges therebetween, one of said members having a tapered end portion, the other or said members having securing means for a hair clip,
said securing means comprising. an end bore in said member.
5. A hair curler as described comprising a comb ALBERT J. EYRAUD. ARGEN'I'INO DE JULIO.
