Description

A. LARROVE, OF COHOCTON, NE\V YORK.
SIDED-BRAKE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,295, dated December 14, 1858.
To au whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, ALBERTUS LARROWE,
of Cohocton, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brakes for Sleds or Sleighs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying dra-wings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view.
T o enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will describe z its construction and operation.
The nature of my invention consists in the manner of operating a self acting brake for sleighs, sleds or sledges for the purpose of stopping them.
In the construction of my invention, (a) is the rod for operating the Scrapers. (b) the doubletree to which the horses or oxen are attached, and is attached to a rod (a) by a bolt (b) passing through it. (c) the lever extending across the sled and up above the top'of the same to which is attached the rod. (c) and (d) are the arms of said lever at`nearly right angles with the said lever (c) and is a part. of it thus bent, or, if more convenient may be made separately. (e) the Scrapers which are, when operated thrown down below the runner of the sled to catch into the ice, snow, or ground. f) a rod extending from the scrapers (e) to a staple in the knee or beam of the sled into which it is fastened by al hook and through which it slides. A, the sled. B, the guide pole. C, the yoke bar to which the horses are attached in front, and which slips over the guide pole.
In the operation of my invention, the team is hitched behind to the bar (by), and in front are attached tothe breast yoke C, and as the beam draws forward, the bolt (12') with rod is drawn forward thus drawing the lever (c) into a vertical position, and thus raising up the Scrapers above the bottom of the runners out of the way so that they will not catch in the ice or snow, &c.; but, when it becomes necessary to lock the sled the beam is made to hold back, then the breast yoke is brought to bea against the raised end of rod (a) causing it to slide back whichcauses the bolt to slide in the mortise, and pushes back and down the lever (c) which operates on the Scrapers (e) vth'rowing them down below the runners of the sled, causing them to catch into the ice or snow, &c., and at once retarding the sled, as they are held firmly in this position by the rods If I wish to back the sled, as the pressure is brought to bear against the rear side of Scrapers (e) they will move forward, since the rodi( can slide forward in the staples, thus offering no resistance in backing.` Then the beam starts forward, the rod (a) is drawn forward as already described and the scrapers are lifted up out of the way. The rod (a) is let into the pole even with the top surface, the doubletree is fastened to a bolt passing through both the doubletree and rod, and when the draft is on the sled, the bolt (b) is drawn up against the front end of the mortise, and this is the point of draft instead of the lever (c) the doubletree can vibrate on the bolt and accommodate itself to the irregular draft of the team.
`The advantages of my invention are, that, my scrapers are always self acting, and will be at all times efficient in stopping the sled, and not prevent backing, and when not required are lifted out of the way by the ac tion of the machine alone. The Scrapers (e) operate on a hinge as seen at (e) formed by joining it to the right angled end of the lever (c) at the lower end the scraper operates on a hinge joint formed by its connecting with rod (f). By the use of these hinged joints the scraper is made to operate at all times in one given position, except when the sled is pushed backward, then it simply slips forward swinging only on the joint (6') as the lower end is pressed forward.
It will be seen that the rod (a) has a joint (af) at the point where the guide pole is attached to the sled, for the purpose of allowing the pole to be raised. The raising of the pole in holding the sled assists the power ofthe brake in connection with the rod (a) when it is forced back by the team. I place my rod 0n top of the pole, by this :1n increase of power is obtained, by the pole raising in holding back the sled.
What I claim as new and desire to Secure by Letters Patent s- The arrangement of lever c Scrapers e and rods f, operating as described, for the purpose of n Self acting brake and Self relieving in backing the sled as set forth.
ALBERTUS LARROVE. Vtnesses T. G. CLAYTON, J. C. CLAYTON.
