By applying the reinforcing tape in this manner, an intermediate double ply portion of the reinforcing tape is presented toward the interlocking fastener members of the fastener and the raw end edges thereof are substantially spaced from the meshing interlocking fastener members of the fastener and directed away therefrom, whereby interference of fraying tape end threads with the meshing interlocking fastener members is totally prevented.
In the drawings and in the following description, stitchings and other details which are not pertinent to this invention have been omitted in 1 the interest or clearness of disclosure.
Referring to the drawings in detail and wlth reference particularly to Figs. 1 and 5, the left front or front panel of a trouser garment is generally designated III, while the right front or front panel is generally designated A waistband i2 is secured to the upper edges of the left and right fronts in known manner, one end of the waistband being provided with a buttonhole It and the other end thereof being provided with a cooperating button Ila. The right and left fronts or front pieces form the front of the garment, forwardly of the s de seams and the inseams of the garment.
Attached in known manner to the inner edge of the left front I0 is the left fly IS, the stitching at its outer edge being designated l5, while the right fly I! is attached in similar manner to the right front One stringer tape l8 of a slide fastener is sewed to the left fly It by a double row of' stitching 20, while the other stringer tape I9 is sewed to thefly II, this latterstringer tape l9 being secured by a row of stitching 2| between the inner edge of the right front II and the right fly H, as shown in Fig. l.
The left front l0 and right front I l are secured together below the fly portion by the center seam 22, and reinforcing stitching 23 of known form preferably extends tranversely of the center seam 22 and through left front ID, right front left fly l6 and right fly H, as shown in Figs 1 and 4.
A conventional shield 24 may be provided at the inner side of the right fly H, as shown in Fig. 5, being secured thereto at one edge by the above-described row of stitching 2| and at the other edge by a row of stitching 25.
As shown in the drawings, the stringer tapes |8 and I9 are provided with reinforced edges 25,
upon each of which is disposed in predetermined spaced relationship a row of interlocking fastener members 21. As shown in Fig. 7, a bottom stop 28 may connect the reinforced edges .26 of the I The reinforcing tape, according to this invention, comprises a flat tape 30 of uniform thickness throughout;- and unprovided with such reener members of thefastener.
inforced edge, as is disclosed in the above-mentioned Seaver patent. This obviation of the 'reinforced edge substantially decreases the thickness of the fly construction and the flexibility thereof.
Preliminary attachment of the reinforcing tape 30 is achieved by stapling it, by means of a staple. 3|, to the stringer tape II on the left fly It. For-' merly, the cross tape was located, as shown in Fig. 6, with one'raw end edge thereof disposed toward the interlocking fastener members 21 of the fastener and toward the path of movement of the slider 29.
According to this invention, however, the initial attachment of reinforcing tape 30 is accomplished as shown in Fig. 2, the tape being laid upon the back surface of the left'hand fastener stringer 18 with its intermediate portion over the interlocking fastener members and both raw end edges directed away from the interlocking fast- The staple 3| is then thrust through the reinforcing tape 30, the
underlying fastener stringer tape it and the left fly It, the staple being placed through an interinforcing tape 30, the stringer tape l8 and left fly l6 together, as shown in Fig. 3. The head of the staple 3| is thus disposed between two plies of the reinforcing tape 30 and between the inner row of stitching 20 and the folded edge of the tape 30. This forms a pocket, in which the head portion of the staple 3| is embedded or disposed,
which totally prevents further contact therewith.
Following stitching of the tape 30 to the underlying fastener stringer tape l8 and left fly l6,
'as shown in Fig. 3, the construction shown in Fig. 3 is turned over upon the right fly I! and the longer, free end of the reinforcing tape 30 is laid down upon the right fly l1 and stitched thereto, preferably by zigzag stitching *32, as shown in Fig. 4. Thereafter, by means of stitching l5 and 2|, the right and left flies are attached to the right and left panels in and H.
As will be seen particularly in Figs. 1, 4 and 5,
the raw end edges of the reinforcing tape 30 are both disposed a substantial distance from the path of the slider 29 and are both directed away from the path of the slider 29.. The raw end edge at the short end of the tape 30 adjacent the staple 3| is preferably terminated -within the outer row of stitching 20, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, whereby there is no free portion to come in contact with other parts of the garment, with other garments, or with the hands of a garment wearer. The other, or longer, end of the reinforcing tape 30 being spaced from the path of the slider 29 v by an intermediate continuous portion of the tape 30, eflectively to prevent fraying of this raw end edge by slider action.
s From the above description, itwill clearly appear that we have provided a new and improved slide fastener trouser flyeonstruction embodying a reinforcing tape which .is' of uniform thickness-throughout and wherein the raw-end edges are both directed away from the path of the slide fastener slider and spaced substantially from the path of the slider, as is the entire reinforcing tape. Furthermore, staple 3|, by which the cross tape is initially attached or located, is embedded within the tape or disposed in the pocket formed therein, whereby it is invisible and insulated from contact with other parts of the garment and other clothing.
It is, of course, to be understood that the above description is merely illustrative and in nowise limiting and that we desire to comprehend within our invention all modifications included within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
