Description

G. Z. WHITNEY. Heel-Protector.
No. 222,759. Patented Dec. 16,1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
GEORDIE Z. WHITNEY, OF OBERLIN, OHIO.
IM PROVEMENT IN HEEL-PROTECTO RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,759, dated December 1d, 1879 application filed August 7, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, G. Z. WHITNEY, of Oberlin, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel-Protectors for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of the pro tector. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of a shoe provided with my improved heel-1 )rotector; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line a: 00, Fig. 2.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to heel-protectors for boots and shoes; and it consists in a concave polygonal plate adapted to be secured in a recess in the boot or shoe heel, to form a wearingsurface, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A represents a small plate of steel or other suitable material, polygonal in shape and concave in cross-section, as clearly represented in. Fig. 3 of the drawings. It is provided with a central perforation, B, countersunk upon the lower concave side to receive the head 0 of a screw, 1), by which it is secured in position upon the heel of a boot or shoe.
E represents the heel of a boot or shoe, in the under side of which, near the outer rear edge, (or wherever the wear is greatest,) I form a recess, F,of suitable size to receive the plate A, which is secured in position by the screw D, as shown.
It will be observed that when the protectiug-plate A is in position its wearing-face is flush with the bottom of the heel, and the screwhead being accommodated in the countersink, and further protected by the concavity in plate A, it is not only protected from wear, by which the notch might become obliterated, but injury to floors or carpets by the sharp edges of the screw-head is also prevented.
When the outer edge of the protecting-plate becomes worn the screw may be withdrawn sutficiently to enable the plate to be taken out of its recess and partly turned, so as to present a new wearing-edge. It is then replaced in the recess, where, owing to its polygonal shape, it is held securely while the screw is being tightened down, as well as afterward,
when the boot or shoe is worn.
I desire it to be distinctly understood that the plate A is to be of equal thickness throughout. It may, therefore, be stamped from plate metal at a nominal expense.
I am aware of the patents to Porter, May S, 1860, Ewing, May 11, 1875, and Van Bensehoten, February 23, 1875, and I claim nothing therein shown; but,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in boots and shoes, the combination, with a boot or shoe heel, E, having polygonal recess F, of a concave polygonal wear-plate, A, of equal thickness throughout, fitted insaid recess, and provided with a central countersunk opening, B, for the fastening-screw G, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- GEOBDIE Z. WHITNEY.
