Description

F. M. SNOOK. Portable-Fence.
No. 222,746. Patented Dec. I6, 1879.
WITNESSES ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
FRED M. SNO OK, OF WAVERLY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 222,746, dated December 16, 1879 application filed October 18, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRED M. SNOOK, of averly, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my improved fence, showing a corner-post. Fig.2 is a top view thereof; and Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of center and panel-end posts, respectively.
This invention has relation toimprovements in portable fences; and the nature of the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the parts of the fence, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the posts of the straight portion of the fence, having their lower edge mortised into a sill, B, and braced thereto by an inclined strut, a.
The sills are secured firmly to the ground by means of pins b driven through holes in said sills, and inclining downwardly toward each other, as shown in the figures.
'The sides of the posts are vertically grooved, as shown at d, the width of said grooves being sufficient to receive the ends of the rails U, reaching from post to post, and constituting a panel therewith.
The railsG are maintained at a proper dis tance apart by means of spacing'blocks c, inserted in grooves 01 of the posts. In long panels a third post, A, is generally used,l1aving a vertical slot, 0, extending from top to bottom, through which the rails extend, the
said rails being held in position by spacingblocks 0; or slots may be. cut through it of sufficient dimensions to receive the rails endwise.
The ends of the upper rail, 0, of each panel are provided with a vibrating wire bail or loop, d, formed by passing a wire through a perforation in the rail and twisting or otherwise connecting its ends. This loop is passed over the end of the adjacent post, and fits snugly around it, for the purpose of holding the rail in place and bracing the panel against endwise displacement.
At the corners the sills are oblique to the length of the straight part of the fence, and the grooves, instead of being on opposite sides of the posts, are on adjacent sides thereofthat is, when the lines of fencing are at right angles to each other.
The spacing-blocks are not fastened in position, and a panel may be taken out at any time by raising the wire loops off thcposts and lifting the rails successively.
What 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
A portable fence consisting of the sills B, the posts A, erected on said sills and braced thereto, the grooves 01 in the sides of said posts, the rails G 0, passed edgewiseinto said grooves, the removable spacing-blocks cc, the vibrating loops (1 on the top rail, and passed over the tops of the posts, and the drive-pins b, extending obliquely through the sills into the ground, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
FRED M. SNOOK. Witnesses:
