KEYLEss Doon LOCK` Filed Sept. 8, 1938 Patented Dec. 3, 1940 iulilalv'rI OFFICE KEYLESS Doon LOCK 4Leonard Courtney Mook, Jr., Lancaster, Pa,` Application ySeptember 8, 1938, Serial No. 228,996
` 6 Claims.
'f My invention relates to an improvement in keyless. door locks.
I An `object of my invention is to provide a keyless door lock which may be locked from one side of the doorl and which may not be unlocked from the 'other side of the door except in emergencies.
A further object of my invention is to provide a keyless door lock whichA may be readily locked when desired from one side of the door, but whichwill not become locked inadvertently or by accident.
A further object of my invention is to provide a keyless door lock which is both reversible and invertible so that it may be applied to doors which are either right-hand or left-hand and may beY adjusted so that it can be locked from either side of the door.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a keyless door lock which is relatively thin and may be used as a mortise lock even on thin doors, such, for example, as on screen doors.
My keyless door lock is designed to be used principally as a lock for a bathroom door, a screen door, a door to a photographic dark room, or a door to any other room in which the occupant wishes not to be disturbed.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation with the lid removed, and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross-section showing the divided shafts disengaged from the lock.
The case for my lock is conventional in form; it is provided with a box-like casing 2, a face plate 4, and a lid or cover plate 6 which is held in position on the casing 2 by customary screws 8.
Within the casing 2 I provide a latch bolt yoke I I) which has on its outer end a latch bolt I2. This latch bolt yoke I0 is -forced outwardly through the face plate 4 by the spring I4 which presses against the inside of the latch bolt I2 and the studs I6 which are made integral with, or may be secured to, the casing 2. The latch bolt yoke I0 at the end thereof remote from the latch I2 is provided WithA a pressure plate I8 against Which the cam 20 and the locking cam 22 may be pressed to retract the latch bolt I 2 at the time that the door is to be opened.
The yoke I 0 is provided with pins 24 extending laterally therefrom and `positioned approximately half-way "between the, latch bolt I2 and the pressure plate I8.
Between the pins 24 and the pressure plate I8 I provide a slot 26 in the yoke I0 so that the yoke may slide over the collars 28 of the cams 20 and 22. These collars 28 are provided with squarev holes therethrough so that the'divided 'shafts 30 and 32 may be properly engaged withthat the cams may be turned ybe doneronlyfrom the inside, a conventional handle secured to divided shaft 32 is turned in a counterclockwise direction with suicient force so thatthe protrusion 34 is forced past the pin 24 extending'laterally from the yoke I0. When the locking cam 22 is in this position, with the pin 24 engaged Within the slot in the locking cam and held there by the protrusions 34, it will be impossible to pull the latch bolt I2 inwardly, by turning the outside knob and the divided shaft 3D, more than a slight distance, the distance between pin 24 and the other edge of the slot within the locking cam 22.
. Since the divided shafts 30 and 32 are screwthreaded together, the turning of the shaft 30 in one direction would merely loosen the screwthreads and consequently would not turn the shaft 32 within the collar 28 of the locking cam 22. When in locked position, the turning of shaft 30 is prevented b-y the abutment of cam 20 against the pressure plate I8.
By providing the beveled edge 36 on the slot in the locking cam 22, it will be impossible for the door to become locked from the outside because if the locking cam were thus moved toward its locking position the beveled edge 36 Would come into contact With the pin 24, which would beretracted with the latch bolt yoke ID by the action of the cam 20, and tend to force the locking cam upwardly into a vertical or unlocked position.
In the event that the door should be locked from the inside and for some reason, for eX- ample if it were locked by a child, the person inside were unable to unlock the door, it would be possible to unlock the door from the outside by merely removing the outside knob forcing the shaft 30 inwardly far enough to engage collar 28 of the locking cam 22 and then turning the shaft 30 in a counter-clockwise direction to disengage the protrusion 34 from the pin 24 and then to turn cam 20 against the pressure plate I8 to retract the latch bolt I2 and unlock the door.
In order to accomplish this, it is necessary in assembling the lock to be certain that the square openings Within the collars 28 be in alignment at the time that the locking cam 22 is in a horizontal position, as is shown in Fig. 1.
To reverse the latch, all that is necessary is to turn the yoke I 0 over. All parts can be reversed and turned over to suit purpose required.
Although I have shown one particular form of ya yoke l0 and a locking cam 22, it Will be understood that the exact configuration of these elements may be readily changed Without departing from the spiritofthe .invention and the scope of the appended claims.
