To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE V. Donn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompany-ing drawing.

My invention relates to improvements in looks, and more particularly has reference to and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in its application to a recording lock, that is to say, a lock which discloses when it is operated. I'Vhere a lock of this character and anordinary lock are used upon the same door both locks are opened in order to gai n access. The proprietor and his employee or employees usually have the key to the regular or usual form of lock and the other lock employed in such a case, but the recording lock usually can be opened by the manufacturer W110 supplies the same and is adapted to record the time of the day or night when the same is locked or unlocked. This is accomplished by a record and clock mechanism,

the cotipcration of which is such that when the recording lock is turned either way a mark is made upon the record which is moved by the clock mechanism so that the exact time is indicated on the record. This invention does not in any way relate to the clock or record making mechanism of the recording lock and has nothing whatsoever to do with the usual form of lock which. is can ployed therewith, but has to do with a means I for preventing the time lock being operated while. the usual form of lock is locked.

Referring to said drawings, Figure l illustrates in front elevation with parts" broken away an application of my invention as ap plied to a door hung in a wall orpartition; Fig. 2 is an enlarged "iew looking from left to right into the jamb socket within Whichthe. bolt of the recording lock is engaged. Fig.3 is an enlarged view, partly broken away, looking from the outside of the door at the bolt of the recording lock. Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line kl-4 of'Fig. 3. The bolt 51 of therecording lock 66 it willbe' observed on. reference to Figs. 3 and 4 is provided with a recess, hollow, or cut to the depth of the recess 7in the bolt 5 so that the thickness of the body of the bolt at the recessis about equal to the distance be tween the end of the pin 9 or base 11 and the end of the pin 10. In order therefore to enable the bolt 5 of the-recording lock to enter or leave the keeper or jamb socket 8, it is necessary that the door be open a suitable distance. In such position of the door the bolt 5 may be advanced by the key 13 or may be withdrawn. If the bolt 5 is'shot within the keeper or socket 8 tl1e door may then be closed owing to the fact that the pin 9 may enter the recess 7 of the bolt. When said parts are in such position the bolt 14 of the usual form of look 15 may beturned by the key 16' into the keeper or housing 17. Of course the keeper or housing 17 .for the bolt 14 must be mounted upon the jamb or partition 12 in such a manner that the bolt 14 enters the keeper only when the door is fully closed. When the door islocked in this position by the usual. form of lock 15 it will be readily understood that it is not possible to unlock the recording look 6 because the pin. 9, within the recess 7 of the bolt 5 prevents the withdrawal of the bolt by the key 13.

It will be understood that, instead of using the pin '10, the width of the interior portion of the keeper 8 may be reduced, so that the distance between the ,wall 19 of the same, as shown in Fig. 2, and the end of pin 9, is substantially equal to the width of the words, the wall 19, looking at Fig. 2, if brought forward as .far as the inner end of the pin 10, will make it unnecessary to employ said pin. Furthermore, the recess 7 in bolt 5 may, of course, be formed upon the outside of the bolt instead of upon the inside of the bolt, as illustratedin Fig. 6. In such case the pin 9 may be eliminated and the bolt 5, as illustrated in Fig. 5. With the door thus slightly opened boFt 14 of the primary lock may enter the keeper 17 as illustrated in Fig. 7 It is therefore necessary tov unlock the usual form of lock 15 first so as to allow the door 18 to be fully closed in order to permit bolt 5 to clear the pin 10. The recording lock 6 cannot be locked after the bolt14 has been locked, as it will of course be understood that the recording lock bolt 5 can not be shot while the door is open because said bolt is then opposed by pin 10.

In accordance with my invention, when the usual form of lock 15 is locked the bolt 5 of the recording lock can not be operated to lock it because the pin 9 or 10 opposes said bolt, nor to unlock it because such pin will then be in the 7 and the material of the bolt at the outer end of the recess will oppose said pin.

It has been known that employees have left the keys of recording locks with irresponsible persons, with instructions to oper ate said locks at specified times, and such persons have followed such instructions,

'whereby such employee has been enabled to leave the place unguarded by the recording lock for a period of time. He thereby gained the advantage of'leavmg before the proper closing hour or of arriving later'than the proper op ning hour, whereas the recording lock would indicate that it had been operated by the employee, at the proper time, although, as a matterof fact, it was operated by an unauthorized person. A particular advantage of my invention is to deter an employee fronrintrusting the. key of the recording lock to an unauthorized person with instructions to operate the recording look at a spe -ified time Said employee would not be lilgely to leave both locks unlocked until said specified time, but would at least lock the door by means of the usual lock 15. lVhe'n the employee has so locked the door, the aforesaid unauthorized person cannot operate the bolt 5 of the recording lock, and

- the employee would not be likely to intrust the keys of both said locks to said unauthorized person. llenoe, my invention providesa safeguard against the operation of recording locks by unauthorized persons for the purpose ofdeceiving employers.

Various modifications may be made with: out departing from the spirit of the inventions as claimed.
