This invention relates to concealed hinges, and particularly to hinges of this type andkind formed from sheet metal butt parts, one comprising a substantially U-sh'aped housing'part,
6 and the other a hook-shaped arm part; and the object of the invention is to provide a hinge of the kind under consideration wherein the hookshaped butt part is of channelled cross-sectional form, the inner end of the hook-shaped 'butt 10 being movably supported upon a pintle fixedly arranged in the housing butt part; a further object of the invention consists in providing in the separate butt parts relatively long'bearin'gs for arrangement on the pintle pin; a further object of the invention is to provide inwardly ofi'set portions on the opposed walls of the housing butt part at the pintle receiving portion thereof to provide bearing surfaces uponwhich the pintle end portion of the hook arm is adapt ed torest, while at the same time leavingthe remainder of the arm free for swinging movement through the housing butt part; a further object being to provide a hook arm of the character described, the outer wall of which is provicled with an inwardly offset rib extendng throughout the major portion of the length of the arm and through the curved portion thereof to give greater strength and rigidity to saidarm, and still further to the reinforcement of that part of each butt where the attaching plate'por tions of the butt join thetop and bottom walls of the housing and hook arm but-t parts; and with these and other objects in view, the inven tion consists in a hinge of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction, efiicient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and'claimed. v p
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying 40 drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:

In the construction ofhinges'of the general type and kind under consideration, it has been the practice toprovide straight or non-chantosimp-ly-pass a pintle or pivot pin throughthe FivalL-structure of the; housing part and along here or passage at the inner end of the hook r5 arm part. lt-has also been a custom to use Inultipledinksin coupling the butts of concealed major "portion of its length. These ofiset portions are drawn or extruded outwardly as seen at [8 in forming long or relatively thick tubular bearing portions for the pintle pin IQ of the hinge. This pin is preferably knurled or roughened as seen at l9a. adjacent the upper head end thereof to retain the pin against accidental displacement from the housing and to prevent rotation of the pin therein. The top and bottom plates l2 and L3 as well as the corner portions of the attaching plates l5 are offset outwardly as seen at 20 to reinforce and strengthen the housing butt part. Two of these reinforcements are preferably arranged on each wall as will be apparent from a consideration of .Fig. 1 of the drawing. i The butt part II comprises a hook arm portion 2 of channelled cross-sectional form; that is to say, the hook arm comprises an outer wall 22 having upper and lower inwardly extending flanges or wall parts 23 0f thegeneral contour illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. These wall parts extend widely where they join the upwardly and downwardly extending attaching plates 24, and are enlarged at the inner pintle ends 25 thereof. The outer wall 221s also oifset inwardly as seen at 22athroughout the major portion of its length to form a reinforcing rib giving strength and rigidity thereto. The enlarged inner end portions25 ofthe top and bottom walls of the hook arm are drawn or extruded inwardly to form thick or long bearing portions 26, similar to the bearings l8. Theseibearings are tubular in form to receive the pintle' l9 and will provide much longer bearing surfaces on the hook arm longitudinally 0f the pin, thus giving added strength and rigidity to the entire 40 hinge, as well as insuring greaterfwearing' life thereto. These long bearings will also substantially eliminate the sagging of the hook arm 'butt partinthe housing butt part as will be 'apparent. f 1
The corner portions of the butt H where the attaching plates 24 join the top and bottom walls 23'are oifset inwardlyas seen at 21 to reinforce and strengthen the mounting of the hook arm butt in connection with'tlie door 'orswinging '50 member; and two of these reinforcements are provided on eachtop and bottom wall in'the construction shown. In this connection it will be understood that in some hinge constructions only one of the hinge reinforcements and 21 55 need be employed. By. constructing a hinge in the-manner described, it will appear that avery strong hinge can be produced from relatively thin sheet metal.' In fact, a hook arm butt part of the channelled cross-sectionalzform disclosed will produce a very sturdy hook arm portion, and one of greater 'strengththan conventional solid flat plate arms. Further, by corrugating the outer wall of the hook'arm, additional strength and'ri'gidity is provided. It will, of course, be apparent that the contour of the hinge butts may be modified to adapt the same to different types and kinds of installations.
In Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, a slight modification of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is illustrated. This modification consists primarily in dispensing with the inwardly drawn bearing portions 26 and instead of stopping the outer wall 22 of the hook arm butt as at 221), this end of the outer wall is extended and curled toform a cylindrical pintle bearing 28. This bearing extends the full height of the hook arm portion 29 between opposed surfaces of the top and bottom'walls 30 and 3| thereof. With this construction, the housing butt part Ill will be the same as the housing butt part shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
Aside from the modification in the construction as described in connection with Figs. 3 and 4, thehookarm'butt'29 will be the same as the butt, ll shown in Figs. 1 and 2. From this standpoint repetition of the description of these parts is unessential as it will be clear from the illustration in Figs. 3 and 4 that these butt parts are otherwise of, the same construction. For this reason only part of the construction has been illustrated in Fig. 3' of the drawing.
It will, of course, be apparent that the pintle 49 will fit snugly in the cylindrical bearing 28 as well as in the apertures formed in thetop and bottom walls 30, 3|, for the reception of the pin I 9. This construction will provide a much longer bearing of the hook arm upon the pintle pin than is provided inthe construction shown in Figs.1and2. '1"
It will be understood that the outer surfaces of the top and bottomwalls of the hook arm butt will fit snugly withinthe seats'or surfaces l1, sufficient clearancebeing allowed-only for the free movement of the butts one with respect to the other. However. said 'outer surfaces of the top and bottom walls of thehook arm butt will be free from the adjacent inner surfaces of the housing part so as to provide free swinging movement of the butts one with respect 'to'the other.
' The housing butt may be said-to comprise a U-shaped butt part terminating at its end in laterally extending attaching-flanges. The attaching flanges of both butts are arranged side by side in parallel relationship when the butts are in closed position. The hook-shaped butt may be properly termed a channelled butt or a channelled hook-shaped arm;
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: g V
1. In a concealed hinge of the classdescribed comprising a sheet metal housing butt part and a hook arm butt part with apintle pin fixedly secured in the housingbutt part'and engaging V the hook arm butt part for pivotally coupling said butts, said housing butt part, comprising a U shaped body having spaced top and bottom-walls joined by a vertical connecting wall, laterally extending attaching flanges at thefree ends of the top and bottom walls, one corner portion only of the top and bottom walls adjacent one side of the vertical wall extending inwardly to form opposed bearing surfaces of limited area on the inner surfaces ofsaid top and bottom walls to snugly receive said hook arm butt part, and said inwardly extending corner portions of the top and bottom walls having outwardly extending bearing portions to provide relatively long bearings on a pintle pin arranged therein.
2. In a concealed hinge of the class described comprising a sheet metal housing butt part and a hook arm butt part with a pintle pin secured in the housing butt part and engaging the hook arm butt part for pivotally coupling said butts, said housing butt part comprising a vU-shaped body having spaced top and bottom walls joined by a vertical connecting wall, laterally extending attaching flanges at the free ends of the top and bottom walls, said top and bottom walls having inwardly extending portions adjacent the vertical wall to form opposed bearing surfaces for said hook arm butt part of limited area around the pintle pin, the boundaries of said inwardly extending portions extending in at least two directions, at least one of the boundaries being arranged angularly to the vertical wall, and said in-- wardly extending portions having bearings for receiving the pintle pin of the hinge. 3. In a concealed hinge of the class described comprising a sheet metal housing butt part and a hook arm butt part with a pintle pin fixedly secured in the housing butt part and engaging the hook arm butt part for pivotally coupling said butts, said housing butt part comprising a U- shaped body'having spaced top and bottom walls joined by a vertical connecting wall, laterally extending attaching flanges at the free ends of the top and bottom walls, and one corner portion only of the top and bottom walls adjacent one side of the vertical wall extending inwardly to form opposed bearing surfaces of limited area on the inner surfaces of said topand bottom walls to snugly receive said hook arm butt part.
4. In a concealed hinge of the. class described comprising a sheet metal housing butt part and a hook arm butt part with a pintle pin fixedly secured in the housing butt part and engaging the hook arm butt part for pivotally coupling said butts, said housing butt part comprising a U-shaped body having spaced top and bottom walls joined by a vertical connecting wall, laterally extending attaching flanges at the free ends of the top and bottom walls, one corner portion only of the top and bottom walls adjacent one side of the vertical wall extending inwardly to form opposed bearing surfaces of limited area on the inner surfaces of said top and bottom walls to snugly receive said hook arm butt part, and reinforcing ribs on said top and bottom Walls and part of the attaching plates thereof, said ribs extending outwardly with respect to outer surfaces of said walls and along the walls for substantially one-half the length thereof.
