UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE L. WISVVELL, OF OLATHE, KANSAS.
IMPRQVEMENT IN COMBINED BUCKLE AND TRACE-CARRIER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,114, dated November 25, 1879 application filed April 22, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE LEROY WIs- WELL, of Olathe, in the county of Johnson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Harness-Buckle and Trace-Carrier; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a combined buckle and trace-carrier, the same consisting of a metal skeleton buckle-frame having books which are located opposite each other, and have their ends bent inward, then forward and downward, as hereinafter described, to adapt them for holding the cockeyes of the traces securely when the latter are not in use, and yet permitting convenient detachment of the cockeyes when required.
The details of construction are as hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the device, taken on line 00 m, Fig. 3, whichfigure shows the back, hip, and crupper straps attached. Fig. 2 is a cross-section. Fig. 3 is a plan view.
In said figures, A indicates the skeleton frame of the device or buckle; B, the backstrap; 0 O, the hip-straps; D, the crupperstrap; and E, a leather chafing pad or plate, which is secured to the under side of the frame A. The body or web a of the buckle is a flat plate whose edges join the irregularly-formed exterior portions of the device. Studs b a project vertically from the plate a, and both pass through the back-strap B, while the rear one, 0, passes also through the hip-straps O. The back-strap B is inserted under a loop or guard, d, while the hip-straps G are similarly inserted under the side loops, 0 e, and overlapped,
as shown in Figs. 1, 3, with the end of the back-strap between .them.
Hooks f f are cast in one piece with frame A, to adapt the device to serve as a tracecarrier. The'same are located on the rear portion of the frame, and have a peculiar form, being bentthree times at a right angle first inward, next forward, and then downward. Thus the pendent portions or ends of the hooks serve as guards to prevent thecockeyes slipping ofE the hooks.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is The buckle-frame A, for connecting the back and hip straps of a harness, the same having the two opposite] y-located trace-carryin g hooks f j, which arebent inward, forward, and downward, as shown anddescribed, for the purpose specified.
THEODORE LEROY WISVVELL.
