Description

NOV.5, 1940. QHW v 2,220,865
PORTABLE FOLDING SEAT Filed June 21, 1939 4 I I INVENTOR.
BY will/ 5 B. H/NPs ATTORNEYS q Patented Nov. 5, 1940 UNiT stars 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a portable folding seat and more particularly to a seat for use at a stadium, a gymnasium or the like, where the seats are constructed out of concrete, iron or wood without back supporting means.
The seats in the stadium are usually exposed to the weather, with the result, that in cold, wet weather they are very undesirable to sit on. To overcome this very undesirable feature, the spectator usually carries his or her own cushion, blanket etc. to sit on during the game.
It is an object of the invention to provide a portable folding seat that will overcome these undesirable features, that is serviceable, durable, and may be cheaply manufactured.
Other features of the invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth.
The invention and its aims and objects will be clearly understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing of one embodiment of the invention herein given for illustrative purposes, the true scope of the invention being more fully pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying explanatory drawing:
Figure 1 is a side View of the seatin open position.
Figure 2 is a side view of one of ing means detached from the seat.
Figure 3 is a front view of the clamping means shown in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the clamp shown in Figures 2 and 3.
Figure 5 is a front view of the clamping means, showing the seat clamped to a supporting base or seat. The back of the seat is shown frag mentary, also the support.
Similar reference numerals are applied to corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The chair or portable seat may be manufactured out of any suitable, light, strong materials and includes a bottom l0 and a back II pivotally connected to the bottom or seat portion by means of brackets l2 and I3 which are secured to the seat by means of pivots l4 and a washer the clamp- I5. Pivoted link members l6, 11, I8 andl9 arranged in pairs are connected to the side edges of the bottom 20 and 2| and the back as at 22 and 23, to limit the swinging of the back beyond a predetermined angle.
The clampingmeans 24 and 25 are secured to the under side of the seat and toward the front thereof as shown in Figure 1 at 2B.
The clamps are identical in their structure save that one is a right and the other is a left, a description of one will, it is believed, suffice. and reference is now made for that purpose to Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4 and 5. The clamp comprises a bearing plate 27 of U configuration having its ends bent at an angle of which are provided with holes for the reception of screws 10 or other suitable fasting means by means of which the bearing plate or bracket may be attached to the under side of the front edge of the seat portion. The bearing plate or bracket is provided with aligned bores 28 and 29. The bracket is so formed that it provides partial housing for the helical spring 30. The clamp member is of a U shaped configuration as shown in Figure 4. One leg 35 of the U is mounted in the aligned bores in the bearing plate as shown best in Figure 2. Around this leg there is provided the helical spring 33', adapted to normally force the leg 32 to the right as shown in Figure 5 when the clamp is opened to mount same, and to maintain the clamp in the position shown in 25 Figures 1 and 3 when the seat is detached from a support. The clamp just described is a left, it is to be understood that the right normally forces the leg to the left as shown in Figure 5 at 33. i A suitable stop pin 34 is arranged in the 30 leg in the supporting plate. One end of the helical spring is connected to the pin as shown at 35, while the other end engages the under side .of the seat as at 36. The legs of the U shaped member may be of equal length as shown in Figure 4. Intermediate the legs of the U there is provided a- V shaped bend 31, see Figures 3, 4 and 5. It will be noted in Figures 1, 2 and 3 that a portion of the bend 38 extends down 40 beyond the bottom 39 of the bearing plate, to provide a means to keep the seat from slipping back on the support when the clamps can not be used. The V shaped bend also provides a means to prevent slipping on the thumbs or fingers in mounting the seat on a support such as shown in Figure 5. Intermediate the length of the bearing plate there is provided a protuberance 40 adapted to prevent slipping of the seat on the support, see Figures 1, 2, and 3 at 40 and 4|. The seat portion is also provided with resilient supports 42 and 43 made of rubber or the like.
It is believed that the operation of the device, as a whole, will be clear, in view of the foregoing description which has been given in connection with the construction of the same.
I am aware that my invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof; and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
I claim:
A portable folding seat consisting of a seat portion, a back portion pivotally. attached thereto, pivoted link supports pivotally attached to the aforesaid portions and provided for the purpose of holding the back portion in correct relation with the seat while in use, fixed U shaped brackets having aligned bores therein and having their ends bent at an angle of 90 attached under and adjacent the front edge of the seat portion, clamping members of U shaped configuration, each having. a leg mounted in the aligned bores in each of the U shaped brackets, a stop pin in each of the legs mounted in the brackets, a helical spring surrounding the leg and having one end attached to the stop pin, the other end of the helical spring engaging a portion of the under side of the seat portion, fixed India rubber feet attached to the under side of the seat portion and rearwardly of the fixed U shaped brackets, the fixed brackets and the India rubber feet acting jointly to provide the feet.
